Hi - can anyone help me with how to teach five year olds how to touch the board and move things? They are digging their nails in, pushing so hard it squeaks, and in general just not getting it. I have tried the terms "gentle," "softly," "quickly" and we practice on our own hands, my hands, and the board and still nothing moves. Thanks Patty

Kara Not sure if it will work, but:

try putting mittens or gloves on them

practice handling real eggs and show if they are rough, they will break them and that's what would happen if they use their fingernails and pound into the whiteboards

Lill I have my first graders use their knuckles. It especially helps those that puch down so hard that they make noises on the board. It may be worth a try. Lill

Brenda Have you tried bending your pointer finger and use the knuckle to drag? We were shown that at one of our trainings.

mm We've had a lot of success in kindergarten and first grade using our knuckles instead of fingertips.

CTJS I use the Hand Pointers that are sold by Scholastic. It also extends the reach of Kindergartners so they can click on higher things.
