A Free Bird is currently welcoming submissions from young artists and writers who have been affected by cancer. Their pieces may or may not be related to their experience with cancer…the theme is “artists’ choice”! We are putting together a special booklet of this artwork and writing (about 5” by 7”) which will offer young artists the chance to have their work published and enjoyed by a national audience! Proceeds from the sales of this booklet will go directly to providing other young cancer patients with arts education opportunities.

Who We Are—
A Free Bird is a new 501(c)3 non-profit organization that aims to provide children diagnosed with cancer, being treated for cancer, or recovering from cancer with opportunities which allow them to explore their artistic passions. We believe the continued exploration of their passions gives these young people the strength and power necessary to help them fight their illness. A Free Bird collaborates with various artists in visual arts and design, writing, and performance arts in order to provide children with both an outlet for their creative energies, and with hope for the future.

I wrote a Thanksgiving craft blog post about how I get my students to think about what they are grateful for every day, and we write it on a bulletin board. I easily transitioned the idea to my family, and now we take time to appreciate all we have at home, too. Try it!

It is sponsoredby Family Promise, a national non-profit organization that mobilizes communities to help homeless and low-income families. Along with materials, the website provides age-appropriate lesson plans, fact sheets and sample letters to send to parents. Using arts supplies and their imagination, students decorate pre-ordered house-shaped boxes to look like a house. Participants take their boxes home and in the following weeks fill them with loose change. On a selected date, students bring their filled boxes back to school for a communal donation to Family Promise or a local homeless organization or both. Raising funds and awareness for homeless families is a wonderful service project for students at all grade levels. Please take a look at this project and consider embracing it, perhaps even forwarding it on to administrators and teachers on your listserves to use in their classrooms. Since its launch in 2010, more than 30,000 children have raised $400,000 for homeless and at-risk children.
