Since 3rd grade social studies is about communities and different cultures I would love my class to have an international pen pal or even a pen pal from another state. If anyone is interested please let me know! We are in North Carolina.

Hi Meagan, I am looking for pen pals for my third grade class in Southern CA. I work at a Title I school (very low income) with a lot of children who are new to the country so they would be fascinated by children from the other side of the country and your climate, etc. What is your demographics like at your school? Even if it's very different, we could try it and see how it goes.
I am the Enrichment teacher for 5-8 grade. I was considering having the students read a novel and complete activities for one of the projects this year. Any ideas on what novel, and activities I could use to include all students in this age range would be greatly appreciated. I'm thinking of using The View From Saturday. Let me know if anyone has used this, and what you think. THANK YOU!!!!
Hi everyone! I am a new third grade teacher and I am looking for some activities I can do with my class on the first days of school to break the ice. If you have suggestions, I would love to hear them. Thanks, Chris
Try a scavenger hunt a list of questions that the students have to ask each other to get the answers for. Give them a certain amount of time and the first 5 that complete it within time gets a prize. I have 7th grade and they love it!!

Hi! I am looking for some center ideas for my first graders and some ways to rotate the groups. What categories do you have for your centers? How do you rotate them? Also, how do you keep them new and interesting so that students do not become bored quickly? Any good ways to introduce centers at the beginning of the year?
FYI - I am doing a fun fish-themed classroom this year and could always use ideas for that as well as clever ways to tie in centers/groups with my theme.
My centers/stations have always been "lacking"..... seriously lacking! I have done workshops this summer, and I have so many exciting ideas! I teach first grade also. I went to a Debbie Diller workshop, and it was great! She wrote "Literacy Work Stations" Making Centers Work! This book gives a step by step way to do centers/stations. I am going to put my students in pairs this year. At first I thought it would be difficult to keep up with all the centers. but after going to her workshop and reading the book, I know it is going to be a big plus in my room. If you can get the book... If not, email me privately and I will give you some ideas. Good Luck!

I am a new teacher teaching in a 1-3 self-contained classroom. I have a very big classroom. I was wondering what type of centers and how many centers should be in my classroom.
I got many file folder games from our local coop. I noticed they came feom Carson-Dellosa Publications. Note of caution: these take a long time to color and cut out. Of course you could use them without coloring them. I just try to make them more visually appealling. Another idea is word sorts. Books we use a lot are Words Their Way. It has all kinds of sorts from beginning consonant sounds to phonic patterns. Those are easy.

Hi from one SPED teacher to another. :) I RARELY come here, but popped in this morning as I'm avoiding cleaning house! :) I use to use more center type activities, then moved to work stations, but now I do more Inclusion (K-2) so I don't use these so much any more. But if you're interested in browsing some things that I used, plus I still add activities that I use now with my students in small groups or one-on-one, you can visit this page of Literacy activities. Make sure you click on the link at the top that says Work Stations and it will take you to a completely different page filled with more activities. If you want things for Math, click on the home page link at the bottom of the page and then click on Math Connections to the left on the home page and you'll find a page of math activities. The Virtual Vine has almost 200 pages of activities that might be used in a K- 2 SPED classroom, so take a peek. :)

I want to do the same thing - I have seven 8th grade science class that have 28 - 36 students with 5 computers in the classroom that we are supposed to utilize. Any ideas on how to use centers here?
Please email me directly and I will send you some formats that you might be able to adapt for your subject area. I also need to know if you can unzip files?
Hello, We will be starting school in a few weeks and I would love to have pen pals for my 26 6th grade students from Wisonsin. We are looking for pen pals willing to correspond about once a month, via snail mail, from a school outside the Widwest. Let me know!
I am teaching in a one room school house in Mongolia with grades 1st-6th and a total of eight students. Although some of the students are clusterd in a grade, some have started a grade already last year or some did not finish a grade the year before. I am looking for any ideas on how to engage all of the students in relavent learning activities while I am instructing individual students. The school day is only six hours long so I have to make the most of every opportunity to work with the students. Also, you can get some basic educational supplies here but anything too out of the ordinary can be hard to find. I'd apprecaiate any help at all!!
