Have anyone tried setting up differentiated instruction in the visual arts classroom? We only have a 45 minute window. How would you start? What type of centers would you set up?
Hello, Yes, I have set up differentiated instruction in my art classroom. I have four tables that hold 8 students each. I pre analyze the art work before my students come into class (usually during prep). Pre analyzing will show me what students are behind in the project. I divide the art work according to what it is needed to bring them up to par(i.e. cutting, painting, etc.) The students who are on track get to 'free draw' from my library of How to Draw Books that period. Depending on the art project, I then designate certain tables for differentiating (i.e. one table watercolor, one table cutting, etc.) Students who are free drawing go to their table(s) first and take turns choosing supplies and books. All other students are given a group mini lesson and a goal for them to meet that period to bring them up to par. One table gets their art supplies, as the other gets different materials. Then they switch. If they finish early, they also get to free draw. It's works very nicely. Now everyone is on track...until next time!
I am pre-k to 8 and I use centers every day. With the primaries, I have centers set up on attribute blocks, modeling clay, watercolors, drawing materials, collage materials, and I change it around often. Intermediate an upper grades use tempera and acrylics, sculpture materials, monoprinting and block printing inks, stitching, crochet, collage, drawing, etc. Each day I introduce a new center, a new theme, or a new technique to use at an existing center. I start off with drawing, then collage, then sculpture, then painting-those are the basics. The the 1st to 4th are graded almost daily while the older ones have a rubric for each center. They can choose which project they want to work on but they must complete that set of objectives. There is little set up and clean up since most classes use the same materials (tables one and two are always the wet media tables, table three is collage, etc).
go to teachingforartisiticbehavior.org. this outlines how to introduce centers into your art room. i'll never teach any other way again.
