To all teachers who use (or would like to use) literacy centers in their classrooms:
I created a new Yahoo Group for teachers to share ideas/experiences/ questions/ resources on literacy centers.
You can check it out at [link removed]
Last year I led a Chicago Foundation for Education study group on the topic and found the collboration to be invaluable. If you use centers in your classroom, PLEASE join. Also, feel free to pass this invite on to any teachers you know who use centers in their classroom.
PENPAL PEOPLE - YOU ARE ON THE WRONG CHATBOARD ! This is the Learning Centers/Classroom Centers Board. Nobody comes here anymore because it's chock-full of Penpal requests. Penpals and Learning Centers are not the same thing! They even wiped out all the posts prior to 3/7/07. Please post on your Penpal Board and maybe we can get the Learning Center people to start posting again. Stephanie's post is a good start.

It was a question about Fluency Centers. I just tried it again and it was again sent to the administrator for review again. How silly. I give up.

Ohh..I'm glad you said that about the c e l l because I was posting one about science centers that had to do with c e l l s and it wouldn't post it either. hmmmmm does it really get reviewed or does it get trashed????
I am a first grade teacher in Indianapolis, Indiana. I have 15 students who are eager to meet new friends to write to. They have already started writing letters to their soon to be pen pals! Please let me know asap! Thanks and look forward to hearing from you and your class! Alison Freistroffer
I recently started a Yahoo! Group for teachers to share ideas, resources, and questions about literacy centers. There are over 750 teachers from around the country sharing their thoughts and materials...

I teach a Middle School Basic Math Class that is an hour and a half long. I am in desperate need of fun activities that can fill up part of this time. I have no curriculum and I have been trying to come up with stuff on my own all year and I now realize I NEED HELP!!! Any ideas?
Did you try the Middle School and Math chatboards at T.Net? They may have some ideas. Also, how about dividing your class into math teams and giving them a tough word problem to work out as a group each day. Teams could compete for a grand prize on the last day (make sure you have consolation prizes too). Google Math Word Problems, Middle School.
Here's one site... [link removed]
You could also try to make a Jeopardy-type game to review all the concepts you've worked on this year.
How about creating models of some math concepts you've covered - create paper 3-D shapes, etc. not really sure what you do in Middle school.
I'm 4th grade and I know I've skipped many of the cross- curricula projects and time-consuming activities in my math book for lack of time - we're so focused on getting ready for the state tests. If I had extra time at the end, I'd go back and take a look at some of these activities.
How about some real-life math --- banking and interest, checkbooks, stock market, measuring for new carpeting in the school...
Has anyone developed this type of activity? How did you do it? I teach struggling readers (middle grades) but want to transition and begin to incorporate literacy centers into my curriculum (not currently using them).
I like to use real life scenarios in my class. I supply job applications, travel plans, menus, etc. and ask them to do some type of activity with the material. This is of course after presenting it to the group. After all it is reading and these are kids about to enter the real world.
I have a feeling you were looking for independent reading, guided reading and independent practice...can work, but takes much research and gathering of materials for older kids.
