I've just been hired to teach a mixed 7th/8th grade self- contained classroom next year. I should have about 15 students total. I have taught only single subjects prior to this - English-grades 7th and 9th (not combined), Algebra I-9th grade, and Geometry-10 grade. I have a zillion questions, but my main question right now is this: Can centers be used with 7th and 8th graders? Would it be considered appropriate? I'm assuming they can be, but have no clue where to begin. I know I need to keep one group busy while I teach the other group . . . any help you all can offer would be greatly appreciated.

renee I teach 6th, 7th, and 8th self-contained (most of the day) classroom. I do use learning centers as well as books on tape, dry erase activities, flashcard practice and board games to occupy one group while I work with another group. Do you have a teacher's aide to work with one group while you teach another group?
