The Institute for Ecological Field Studies Ltd offers
international programs that promote the study of
endangered environments through first hand observation and
field-based instruction. For the past 15 years, junior
high and high school teachers, along with college
professors have participated in our programs located in
the Bahamas and in Costa Rica. Students and teachers are
eligible for transferable college credit through the
University of Wisconsin.
We are inviting you to sign on for an amazing experience!
There is still space for both The Bahamas and Costa Rica
for the summer of 2004, but hurry because space is
limited. TEACHERS RECRUITING 7 PAYING STUDENTS FOR THE
BAHAMAS OR COSTA RICA ATTEND OUR PROGRAM FREE OF COST,

Bahamas:
Eleutheran Adventurers is a week long marine eco-adventure
program. Participants will learn about the marine
communities and tropical ecology of the Bahamas, along
with its history and culture. Activities include
snorkeling on primary reef systems, kayaking, drift-
snorkeling, island exploration, caving, beach surveying
and more. The evening classroom discussions include
lessons on fishes, invertebrates, corals, Bahamian history
and conservation.
Costa Rica:
La Esquela del Bosque is a 9 day rainforest eco-
educational adventure. Through our instructors,
participants will be introduced to life within a tropical
rainforest and learn first hand how it is important to the
world. They will also learn how the rest of the world is
rapidly having its effect on the rainforest. Activities
include day and night hikes through primary rainforest
communities, waterfall repelling, gold panning, horseback
riding, and dolphin watching. Lessons include introduction
to botany, ornithology, herpetology and rainforest
conservation issues.

entertaining way.
Be sure to see the Education Department for a discussion of
landfills, and don't miss the site's mascot, Trashasaurus
Rex. The beast is made almost entirely of postconsumer solid
waste. There are lots of links to good environmental sites
in the Research Department, too.

up about it. I was thinking about something with water
plants and ph levels, but I am not really sure what
direction to go in. Any ideas would be greatly

In our memory lane, birthday
Is a good reminder of eventful past-
And we try to celebrate it often and hope,
This wouldn’t be the last!
Unsurpassed mystery and interactions
Of livelihood may also appear-
As we travel down the driven paths
In each and every year!
Exciting accounts of life may be kindled
To bring us happiness or pain-
And they might offer an immortal impression
Of awareness, not to go in vain!
The news about birth and death seem to move us
Deeply with joy and tear-
And we do try our best to keep official records
Of day, date, and year!
But it may not be possible on every occasion
And still history will be made-
And let me tell you the story about
An “Ambassador” born in the shade!
Awareness was created upon his death
For the future generations to think-
And the lessons learned should guide us
To propagate the thought process to sink!
Keiko, the whale “Free Willy”, was
The “Ambassador of Human Awareness” for sure-
And will be definitely missed by the millions
About the story he taught us to endure!
Humble beginnings of Keiko go back to 1977 or 1978,
When he was born in cold Iceland-
And captured a year later, against his will,
To be amused in children’s hand!
He lived in a down-in-the-mouth aquarium
Outside Reykjavik, for several years-
And helped to raise money from the visitors,
While raising their amusing cheers!
He was sold to Marineland, a park in Niagra Falls,
Ontario, in Nineteen Eighty Two-
But he was bullied by the older whales there,
And those stories we remember too!
In 1985, Keiko was bought by Reino Adventura
Of Mexico City, for caricature and fun-
And he became fond of children and camera
That really kept him on the run!
The whale facility at Reino Advetura was too small,
Too shallow, and too warm for him-
And there were no other whales to keep him company,
And so his eyes began to dim!
His droopy dorsal fin in such captivity
Revealed lethargy and made him look sad-
And the efforts started to ship him to a coldwater tank
That the State of Oregon had!
Mexican children cried bitterly in January 1996,
When Keiko was being taken away-
And shipped to Oregon, where he felt
The soothing effects of ocean water in his way!
Slowly he regained health with vigor and by 1998,
Became ready on his road to freedom well-
And flown to Iceland to put him back
In his home waters, where he started to dwell!
In subsequent summers, he encountered many orcas,
But none from his own family member-
So he felt uneasy and left Icelandic waters
In 2002 that we surely remember!
He swam a long distance by himself across the waters
Of Atlantic Ocean to Norway-
And fed himself, without the offerings of human food
And comfort, along the way!
He was soon discovered off the Coast of Norway
And warmly greeted by children of all ages-
But the over-attention and camera affected
His rehabilitation and that story still amazes!
He was offered a secluded bay in a sheltered fjord
As a home base to be worry free-
But he remained in the vicinity of Taknes Bay
To socialize with his own kind to agree!
Well, in spite of global efforts, Keiko, the orca star
Of the film “Free Willy” died in Taknes Bay-
But left a legacy through his life of 27 years
That will shine like the bright sunray!
In Japanese, “Keiko” means “Lucky One”
And he lived up to his name-
And starred in three “Free Willy” films
Where he gained his global fame!
He touched our lives and allowed fans
To play with him or even crawl on his back-
And taught the values of compassion, justice,
Kindness and respect, instead of harpoon attack!
So, before conclusion, I love to say this,
Although it’s very very true, as it is-
Keiko, you are the “Ambassador of Human Awareness”,
And a symbol of global peace-
And your absence is now deeply felt,
And surely we are going to miss!
You swam the rugged oceans
For over twenty-seven years-
And entertained to make us stress free
With applauding cheers!
You raised the profiles of wild orcas
With other whales to unknown heights-
And inspired the human species to protect
Marine creatures under research lights!
Please remember, you will shine like an orca star
Of the world’s ocean and the sea-
While my lonely heart will lit up to say:
“Au revoir, Keiko. I do love thee”!!!

“Hundreds of children laid stones on the grave of
“Free Willy” (movie star Keiko, the killer whale)
in Norway on Thursday (January 8, 2004) in an
emotional Viking-style ceremony. About 300 children
Placed stones in a pile where Keiko’s carcass
was hauled out of a western fjord and buried
after Hollywood’s top cetacean celebrity died of
pneumonia on December 12, 2003.” Keiko was buried
on December 14, 2003 (Sunday), along the shorelines
of Taknes Bay, Norway.

Yes the same drug you needs a note from your doctor to get
in the USA .. Yes it’s a Narcotic The Little "n" on the
bottle is for Narcotic and you have to look close for this
little n , but teens got better eyes then we do .. Read the
label it does not say it is Addictive .. Does not say much
of anything on the label. All that small print I needed a
maginfling glass to read it but I did .. You really need
to read it and it still does not say any thing about
Narcotic or addictive .. just that little " n "
When I call the people that should be helping me like Health
Canada " they hung up on ME . The people that Make and Sell
this drug said they would call me back . if it ok with you
I will not hold my breath waiting for their call O ya The
Pharmacy College said they would call me back too still
waiting I called and sent Emails to as many as people as
I can 1000’s . I would still be sending people Email about
this , but police came to my door today Friday 13 about
this .. What’s wrong with this pictures .. plus what wrong
when anyone one can walk into any drug store and buy a
Narcotic legal. How do you know your local drug addict ,
when one drug store runs out of the drug .. they walk up
the road to the next drug store get the drug they need
there same price $5:00 . I would not want this to happen to
anyone specially Teens .. any ways I sent out Email to most
school districts in Ontario and Many out West all over
Canada .. I send all kinds of Email to the Ministers ..
They all know .. Now it’s your turn Call your district or
minister or send them Emails asking them about this , if
they did not get my Email . asked them to get it , call
the Minister and get a copy .any minister they all got a
copy .. Parents work hard to keep our Teens safe and free
from drugs at all times .. beware it around 50 or 60 pages
long . Email is Called Parent Needs Help Now. it has all
the details about the New $5:00 High

They Made Me A Junky.. I would have never taken this drug if
I knew then what I know now .. don’t let it happen to

As the glaciers and sea ices are becoming thin!
Earth’s temperature has risen steadily,
And the ice covers have begun to melt-
So the dreams of snow-explorers could become
A nightmare or be easily felt!
Global warming may appear to be a bad news
For the future generations to come-
And most of us spend little time to worry about it now,
While I cannot remain calm!
“Hillolscope” reveals that world’s climate can lurch
From one state to another in a decade or less-
And reminds us the need to adapt to or cope with
The situation that we may have to face!
The Mother of all security issues is closely dependent
On the global climate change-
While the disruptions of geopolitical balance of power
exist,
Within or even from a close range!
Cooling in the Northern Hemisphere might occur,
And lead to harsher winters for sure-
Especially in the U.S. and Europe,
Causing massive droughts the peoples may have to endure!
Green forests might turn to brown-white ashes,
And farmlands to mega bowls of dust-
Followed by the destabilization of nuclear powers,
The root cause of hegemonic lust!
Recent studies of temperature indicators,
Embedded in the ancient layers of Arctic ice-
Have shivered the climatologists, via climatic shifts
With shocking speeds and a rolling dice!
It’s the fact that Mother Nature had caused
The global climatic changes in the past-
But the one shaping up now may be caused by us,
Veiled under the delayed forecast!
Global warming, observed over the past fifty years,
Is attributable to human activity link-
And it’s supported by strong evidence, rounded up
By climate experts, and is forcing me to think!
Burning of fossil fuels, such as oil and coal,
Releases heat-trapping carbon dioxide in air--
And dismayingly causes the abrupt changes
In climate for the global habitats to share!
We have begun to read about shrinking Arctic ice
And melting Alpine glaciers in the book-
While the snows of Kilimanjaro, by 2020,
May appear only in the old pictures to look!
Himalayan glaciers have been thinning,
And retreating over the span of past thirty years-
Followed by the Antarctic ice shelves that existed
For thousands of years are crumbling in tears!
Today, these events lead me to believe
The new cataclysm is awaiting us to face-
And the accelerations are gaining momentums
To overwhelm the solemn mess!
Such jeremiads seem to reverberate the melting
Of sea ice and mountain glaciers’ sobbing-
And will edify apocalyptically about the
Abrupt change over a period for human lobbying!
The largest aggregation of tropical winds will resort
To violent storms on their ways to subside-
And cause the oceans to break through levees
With redirection of water flow to a new tide!
Mega droughts afflict many nations today
To cause dust storms or loss of soil in a flick-
And demand abundant resources, with expertise
In new technology, sharp and slick!
With the progress of climate change, pressures
To confront are building up at an alarming speed-
To de-magnify the gaps between haves and have-nots
With a thought of globalization seed!
History of Earth’s habitats shows the fallacy
Of human choice between starvation and raid-
And the “raid” turned out to be an obvious winner
Or choice to witness the millions dead!
Invasion of another countries continues to rise
In devious ways to access the opponents’ minerals and gas-
And the skirmishes with armed conflicts
Are becoming so viable for the killing of mass!
Change of water temperatures causes migration of fish
To new habitats, and has added a new scorn-
Over the fishing rights; and fisheries are disrupted
Globally, while a new daily war is born!
In “H-Ray Vision”, proliferation of nuclear arms
Is inevitable, irrespective of hegemonic powers-
And the trend will continue via secret deals
With a cash flow, overlooking the control towers!
Oil supplies are stretched thin already,
As the climate cooling has driven up the demands-
And many countries are shoring up their energy
Supplies with nuclear energy from other lands!
Thus, nuclear proliferation has accelerated
In spite of the efforts of control by only a few-
And newer threats of global invasions
From the developing nations are adding the hue!
With population explosion and climate change,
Demands for objects of daily living will soar-
And “Hillominous Flow of Thoughts” warns about
Wars over food, water, and energy, to cause uproar!
So, as the climate change hits our planet slowly,
Wars may loom to re-define the human life for sure-
And dire consequences on social, ecological, and
Geopolitical fiasco will be a bitter pill to swallow or
endure!!

Making the Connection – Communicating Texas Water Issues
in Life and Arts

Whether you view it as the essential element of life or
rejuvenation for the soul, water and water themes pervade
our lives. Our first quest on Mars was to find evidence of
water. Literature is rife with water symbols. What is it
about water that drives our lives, our communities and
sometimes our hearts?
Join us on April 16, 2004 to explore water for the 21st
century and how language arts figures in the struggle to
communicate some of the most compelling and emotionally-
charged water issues Texans face today.
What’s in store: Using water issues as the theme, students
will learn techniques communications professionals use to
strategize, communicate and motivate through print, video
and graphic arts.
• Experts will present several key current issues on
water in Texas and how Texas Parks and Wildlife staff and
others craft messages, exhibits, videos and essays in the
face of controversy and conflict.
• Eight school districts across the state will
choose a water issue or water quote relevant to their
community and interpret it in a three-minute video that we
will broadcast throughout our show. These students are
participating in a creative grant called “Making the
Connection,” linking language art and technology.
• We’ll also have a little fun putting our students
through some challenge games, plus we’ll have polls and
interactive quizzes that your students can enjoy during
the webcast.
Planned topics include:
Communicating the State of Water: Will we have enough
water to meet the demands of our growing population? What
about the needs of wildlife? What challenges do we face
with misperceptions and conflicts among users? What
communications strategies will we utilize? We’ll talk with
water and communication specialists to learn more about
these issues.
Top of the Mind: Through a case study, we’ll look at
marketing a message, storyboarding and video techniques
that inform and motivate.
Making It Real – the art of interpretation: What is
interpretation? How do we pick themes and develop
effective exhibits? What techniques help make something
relevant and real?
