My middle school student needs info for gadget/gizmo project, needs to design and manufacture a gadget/gizmo from garbage as a recycling project. If you have any ideas or suggestions pls let me know. She was thinking of some kind of bird feeder or birdhouse made from recycled soda bottles, but doesn't know how to start. Any other ideas are welcome. Thanks
I have a good friend who enjoys recycling objects to make birdhouses, and they are great. One thing he's used is an old, metal coffee percolator. He uses the handle to hang the birdhouse, and when the glass knob is removed, small birds can enter through the hole in the lid. He's also used things like boots, baskets, plastic thermos jugs, and downspouts. I've attached a photo of the last one.
Also, your daughter might be able to find something at The Imagination Factory, my art/reuse and recycling site, so I've linked to it. Go to Previous Activities for a list of all the projects at the site, or see the Trash Matcher to find the art activity based on the solid waste materials you have available. Good luck!

Last year I checked out a book about pigs cleaning out a barn, using the found objects to make a hot air balloon. I can't recall the title and would like to use it for Earth Day activities. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Shirley
Since I last posted, I have added new pages to the website about the ever changing Great Lakes. There are satellite pictures, and information about the ecology of the Great Lakes. The book, The Dynamic Great Lakes has a strong environmental message and is suitable for students from middle school through college.
Poem of Hillol Ray Adapted by U.S. Scouting Service By Dr. Pompeyo Carlos Andrade
What a joy and excitement for me to spread the news about glorious achievement of a bi-lingual American-Indian Poet, Hillol Ray, whose formative years were spent in Calcutta/Kolkata, India ... He has broken the traditional barriers and standards of poetry writing, and added new dimensions and styles with in-depth issues for the present and future generations of humanity. His didactic poems echo his prophetic voice for the protection of Nature, Environment, and the crying needs of a sustainable “Blue Planet”. Through his poetry as well as professional background as an Environmental Engineer, Hillol Ray has beautifully created and continues to craft profound awareness for all segments of people around the world. The list of accolades bestowed on him spans over the past several decades.
Hillol Ray, popularly known as “The Poet of a Thousand Accents”, has recently added another feather to his overcrowded hat! His unassuming charismatic persona and style have truly made him an icon and a trendsetter in the fields of today’s poetry. As a “Poet of Neuroscience”, “Poet of Human Rights (HR)”, [synonymous with his name initials - Hillol Ray (HR)], and “A Poet of Ecology”, he has established and unveiled the strong foundation of awareness of global humanitarian issues. Undoubtedly, his in-depth poems unequivocally reverberate the frequently overlooked issues of the degradation of environment and humanity. So. with sincere optimism and sublimed agenda, his poems continue to be published in the magazines and displayed on web sites around the world.
Recent issue of “BALOO’S BUGLE”(A Publication of U.S. Scouting Service Project; Volume 10, Issue 7; April 2004) reveals that the Circle Ten Council has adapted the poem “Earth Day” by Hillol Ray, for Skits, and is being considered for an opening or closing ceremony CD. According to this issue, during a performance, each scout will read a pair of lines from his “Earth Day” poem. For details, readers are encouraged to view the following (through [link removed]):

Congratulations, Hillol ... Let the flow of ink in your mighty pen continue for the betterment of nature, environment and humanitarian issues. You are the messenger and mouthpiece of and for the humanity!!
