Earth Day Poem By Hillol Ray Adapted In “Character Education” Curriculum in Florida, U.S.A. By James Butler
The celebration of Earth Day in and around the month of April has become a global event in each year. Initiated in 1970, the Earth Day activities over the years have expanded into many remote areas and developing countries to create awareness about the protection of planet Earth. In this connection, Hillol Ray (HR), the Poet of Ecology, Neuroscience, and Human Rights (HR), skillfully and articulately composed the world renowned “Earth Day” poem that has achieved and continue to receive global accolades since April 22, 1995.
Today, I am proud to share and announce that the Broward County of Florida, U.S.A. has adapted the Earth Day Poem by Hillol Ray as part of a lesson plan in its curriculum to plant the seeds of awareness among students in Elementary Schools. The Broward County School District serves 250 schools in the State of Florida. The aforementioned poem, displayed on the April 2004 newsletter* was released during Earth Day Celebrations this year, and Seventeen Thousand (17,000) hard copies were distributed throughout the school system. The message at the bottom of this newsletter indicates, “ This public document was promulgated at a cost of $815.44 or $0.048 per copy to inform the public about environmental issues”.
Congratulations, Hillol. Please continue your lifelong missions of creating global awareness through your magical poems, and touch the present and future humanity. Let your poems be the ringing affirmations of hope and destiny of mankind. ________________________________________________________ * [link removed]

Earth Day 2004 Celebration Speech Delivered By Hillol Ray, the Keynote Speaker At EPA Region III in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. on April 20, 2004
"Good morning everyone.
Thank you Mr. Damm**, for honoring me with your introduction. Let me begin by expressing my appreciation to Ms. Bonnie Lomax, for inviting me to join with you in celebrating Earth Day 2004. And, of course, I also thank each of you, both for the incredible work you are doing to protect the environment, and for taking the time to attend this program today.
It's a privilege for me to speak to an audience of professionals and experts in the field of environmental affairs, both from within and outside of EPA Region III.
Since its inception in 1970, public celebrations of Earth Day have spread across the globe , signaling a remarkable awareness of the need to protect our "Blue Planet." For me, this visit to Philadelphia inspires feelings of a "Homecoming." In fact, it was just over twenty-nine years ago that I first landed in America, right here in Philadelphia, having traveled halfway around the world from my home in Calcutta, India - the land of Bengal Tigers. I still vividly remember, how I adapted to this new land since my arrival.
Without question, the past thirty four years have yielded an impressive set of environmental standards, which on paper have won national assent, and most of which are now enshrined in legally binding covenants. But the greater challenge is to entrench these standards, and above all, to see them implemented in practice. EPA has been on the forefront of efforts to carry out such Herculean tasks, and the evidence lies all around.
Unfortunately, the problem of environmental degradation is particularly acute in the developing world. Access to safe drinking water, sanitation, breathable air, and pollution free soil continues to be but a hope for the people of poorer nations.
Given my educational background and my experience in the environmental field, the root causes of such degradation profoundly moved me – - in an almost spiritual way. And with some initial apprehension, in 1976, I set out like a Bengal Tiger to create global awareness through my poems on environmental themes. Still there are many environmental and public health challenges that we need to wrestle with. It is my sincere hope that my poems will somehow instill a sense of the urgency with which we must act to sustain our planet for humanity.
Please remember, our lives no longer belong to the local environment we live in; rather they belong to all those living in degraded environments who need us desperately as a savior for their environment of today and tomorrow.
So, with that frame of reference, let me share a glimpse of my heart through my didactic poems about environmental awareness.
I would like to open my readings with "Earth Day" poem, followed by other poems on various environmental issues. Before I begin, let me say “thanks” to Mr. Mckenty, for providing background music through his CD. I hope, you enjoy the poems, and thank you once again for your kind attention."
