The Imagination Factory integrates art with science and social studies to teach kids about reuse and recycling. Visitors learn how to use common, household trash or other easy to obtain solid waste to make drawings, paintings, sculpture, origami, collage, papier-mâché, printmaking, marbling, and crafts.
See the site's Trash Matcher to find appropriate art activities for the solid waste you have available, and the Project Matcher is helpful in coming up with ideas for science and social studies fairs. The Previous Activities section contains all activities, and you will find links to many more Earth Day or environmental sites in the Research Department.
Two activities that are great to use with groups of kids include the litter collage entitled America the Beautiful?, which is pictured here, and Trash a Pizza. If you'd like to make a larger pizza than described, just use a larger sheet or two of cardboard for the base.
I need to make a small scale windmill for an earth day project, and I was wondering if anyone knew where I could get the instructions? I'm having a difficult time finding it online. Or of anyone actually has instructions, that would be wonderful!

About Sneakyuses.com
Sneakyuses.com promotes resource conservation with clever reuse of everyday objects with how-to projects, books ("Sneaky Uses for Everyday Things").
“Sneakier Uses for Everyday Things” has a science reuse and conservation theme illustrating how we can do much more than we think with what we already have.
The book, a sequel to the bestseller "Sneaky Uses for Everyday Things," offers such projects as: turning milk into a plastic, making a radio with a penny, detecting counterfeit currency and turning on toys with a magnet, storing a survival kit inside a watch, receiving aircraft signals with an AM/FM radio and how devices can be placed in clothing to make a 007 'gadget jacket.'
Sneaky Uses for Everyday Things is now in its 12th printing and Sneakier Uses for Everyday Things is already in its 4th. Each book includes over 40 projects and amazing stories about resourcefulness including: people who make boats made out of milk cartons, the window washer who used a squeegee to save an elevator car full of people from World Trade Center Tower One on September 11, 2001, as well as the story of the Colditz glider, an 18-foot airplane built by prisoners in a German war camp out of materials scavenged from their beds and sleeping bags.
Gayle Anderson of KTLA Channel 5 News reported that parents saw an improvement in their children’s grades in science after reading the books. A Minneapolis school has recently developed resourcefulness courses based on the book. “Sneaky Uses” has been featured in publications including the Los Angeles Times and U.S. News & World Report, on NPR’s Science Fridays and on television shows including KTLA Morning News, Chicago's CBS Tech Tuesday Show and CNN Headline News.
Publishers Weekly says: "Offering readers a chance to become real-life MacGyvers, Tymony's “Sneaky Uses for Everyday Things” shares a mixed bag of useful and useless tricks. The book, which may remind 007s-in-training of The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook, offers sections on gimmicks, gadgets and survival techniques (the last section is by far the most valuable).
The National Science Teacher Association says: "On the old television series “MacGyver,” the hero was always getting out of tough situations by making practical devices out of simple materials. The author of Sneaky Uses for Everyday Things interests students in the wonders of science by showing them how to do their own amazing MacGyver feats. This approach not only gets students interested in science, but also encourages good critical thinking by students as they solve practical problems." For more information see [link removed]
Wiper of Crocodile Tears (In Loving Memory of Stephen Robert Irwin) February 22, 1962 - September 4, 2006
===================================== Stephen Robert Irwin, nicknamed "the Crocodile Hunter," was an Australian naturalist and television personality, best known for the television program The Crocodile Hunter, an internationally-broadcast wildlife documentary co-hosted with his wife Terri Irwin. The Irwins owned and operated Australia Zoo in Beerwah, Queensland. (Source: [link removed]).
He died on September 4, 2006, during an encounter with a stingray, while shooting a new TV film show on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. ==================================
Today, a venomous stingray took you away To an ocean of peace- So I am deeply saddened of you, And will continue to miss!
You indulged yourself and life In dangerous animals’ game- With an irrepressible, effervescent personality, And propelled to the global fame! You stalked lions, faced off with snakes, And wrestled the crocodiles- To convey the message of conservation, While putting the global face on smiles!
Your untimely death is tragic, And truly a global loss- ’Cause your desperate love of snakes And lizards tells who’s is the boss! You are the wiper of crocodile tears, And will remain under global view- While your didactic shows will thrive On TV with color and hue!
You will inspire us, Steve, from heaven, As an impetus for actions- And pave the way of conservation tales Among believers and factions! Now I pray to God for peace To you, your family, and Nation- And join the world on such a tragedy, Echoed from air, ocean, and your passion!!
I am doing an energy project with my grade 6 and 7 studentsand have a few ideas which I hope my students would find original.
The main idea of the project is that are more healthy to the environment.
Some activities I have planned: 1) Designing (Design Tech) an building a simple solar oven (Science), which we want to cook food. 2) A Energy Magazine ( Art, ESL, Modern Forreign Languages,IT, Science and Social Studies) with Local and Global articles. This is where I would like your help or participation. Did you do something similar? or Would you like to involve your class to take part in a news article about Renewable Energy Projects/ Clean Energy in your area/country? 3) Energy Art Calendar 2007. I am planning to release a calendar for 2007 with art sketches, photos, portraits, collages etc. I would like to reserve 4 months for international contributions. An exchange of art pieces can be possible if you want your school or class to take part.
You are invited kindly to take part, if this fits in with your curriculum.
