Indigenous Peoples: The Fabric of Global Humanity By Hillol Ray
Historians of all ages agree that the colonization Construed the violation of human rights- While the New World saw the racism, Massacres, starvation, and the “Indian fights”! Such practices today, known as the ethnic cleansing And genocide, are still going on- And seem appalling ’cause subjugation Was legally sanctioned from dusk until dawn!
As per indigenous law, indigenous interests Can hold native title with restrictive clause- While the law introduced by Euro immigrants Obscures native title via excuses and flaws! Indigenous peoples were truly marginalized Without allowing them any turn around time- By dominant descendents of Europeans Who valued indigenous lives with nickel or dime!
The harshness of this fallacy caused some people To disappear or become victims of race- And still feel separation from their lands While allowing sadness to permeate global face! Indigenous peoples, forcibly separated from their heritage, Continue to tackle the fears- Of poverty and marginalization, loss of culture And language, followed by trail of tears!
Social problems like alcoholism and suicide Are creeping in to suppress the hidden pain- Among the indigenous peoples, lying below The social structures, and without any gain! Threatening from political upheavals and Civil wars are creating tantrums in their mind- While modern conservation policies protect the animals, But keep these humans behind!
Being driven out of homeland, they became unable To lead life in their traditional way- And facing hardship with assimilation While modern world is not fast enough to sway! Language, religion or cultural beliefs of theirs Are object of ridicule and found in the tale- While the values, inherent to their knowledge, Is unrecognized and going down to hell!
To curb down discrimination against them, My pen is scribbling under moonlit night- And vows to draw global attention To their problems before they become out-of-sight! I appeal to the “dominant community” To embrace them with passions and heartfelt love- And allow them to live as fabric of global humanity With blessings from the Lord above!
Well, as I conclude with my thoughts, I can view a glittering star on the horizon now- And hear a whisper from the United Nations That stands ready with its’ priority vow! The progress towards reconciliation is a necessity To enforce the rules without a flaw- While violators of human rights must be punished To show that no one is above the law!!

ICC**: The Beacon of Human Rights (HR) By Hillol Ray (HR)
To end impunity for the most heinous crimes Under international law, the reality is here- Through the birth of ICC the humanity has achieved A milestone and is so proud to share! The unequivocal message emerging from ICC Will control the abuses of human rights- While the international humanitarian law Will ask the perpetrator to end bloody fights!
An unflagging fearless determination to uphold The cause of human rights will be the key- Used by ICC, to protect the poor, oppressed And victims of injustice, from heaven to sea! The rules will be deployed impartially to promote The justice wherever it finds the need- Even under the shadow of desperate situation, Created by terror or an abominable deed!
Vigilance is essential, and security shouldn’t be Achieved by sacrificing the human rights- While respect for democracy and social justice Will prove prophylactic against any fights! So ICC is too proud to rejoice for its ability To strengthen the moral conscience or power- And will protect the innocent victims of vicious violence Directed from the unseen tower!
Any small sacrifice of basic freedoms in the battle Against human rights is totally wrong- And efforts are needed to promote tolerance, Followed by harmony, as a melodious song! Violence should never be accepted by members Of one belief against another at any time- Rather, we must elevate our global humanity At a higher level, and punish the war crime!
Let us remember that diversity gives the human species Its splendor and there’s no doubt- While moral clarity or intellectual accuracy Are needed in each judgment to stop a shout! So, I admire the efforts of ICC, and am sure, It will be the beacon of human rights- By focusing its thoughts to humanitarian law And bring our future bathed in lights!! _______________________________________________________
** The International Criminal Court (ICC) will be a permanent court for trying individuals’ accused of committing genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. The ICC will enter into force on July 1, 2002 and be established over the course of the next year. This poem is being dedicated by the author as a goodwill gesture towards ICC for its efforts to promote the value of human rights (HR) - Hillol Ray (HR), 04/14/2002.

Outer Space: The Peace Province of Mankind By Hillol Ray
Space explorations give us the sense of global stewardship That we so desperately need- While Space Race that began forty years ago Became an unrivalled focus for global deed! As part of the world’s cultural heritage, Space has inspired imaginations in many of us- And the generations of poets, scientists Followed by musicians agree, without any fuss!
Space technology improved lives by sparking creativity In the fields of sciences and arts- And helped to sustain our future on this planet Via close monitoring and scientific charts! Earth observation satellites keep up with the problems Of global environmental change- While forecasting earthquakes and the relief coverage Also falls under this wide range!
Throughout history, societies have searched For meaning of life in outer space and sky- And admired space explorations to capture The imaginations without fear or being shy! Thus, the fascination has led the young people To pursue careers in Technology of Space- And it’s helping the developing countries To improve through their technological base!
Via Space Technology, the Internet spits out the Information within twinkling of an eye- And we can communicate with a friend on another continent To share or sigh a deep sigh! Victims of earthquakes, and other disasters Can be now helped through satellite phones- To determine the strategy of the relief workers, And bring the victims to safety zones!
We are lucky to live in a millennium where The improvement of lives is the priority one- By driving the Space-age Technology to new frontiers That the modern science has done! Still I see that our greatest challenge is not over, And we need to cross the final frontier- Via bridging the divide between technology’s Haves and have nots who are shedding tear!
To promote literacy and rural education, Space Technology is now playing vital roles- By reaffirming common interests in the progress Of Space explorations and black holes! Astronauts have to be regarded as the “envoys of mankind” And must not be harmed- In the event of accident or emergency landing On a foreign territory that may be armed!
The campaign about outer space underlines the benefits For peace province of mankind- And provides the valuable impetus to push us further By putting superpowers in a bind! I am here today as a cheerleader of the campaign To encourage exploration in outer space- And appreciate United Nations to ensure rational approach For betterment of human race!
Lion of the Mount Everest A Personal Tribute to Sherpa Tenzing Norgay May .., 1914 – May 9, 1986
By Hillol Ray ([email removed])
In a remote village of Thami in Nepal, a ‘Sherpa’ Was born in May of Nineteen Fourteen- Who had shunned the world by sumitting the Everest, That mankind had never seen! Darkness in the field of mountaineering Was illuminated and quietly spellbound- By the brightness of this only Sherpa That nowhere else could be found! Later, the brightness became brighter As he was growing up with the years- And taught the trekkers how to climb, By removing their hidden fears!
Brightness of this only Sherpa Was watched closely by the God- And he changed him to a ‘Guru’ Of mountaineering with a very simple nod! Thus “Tenzing Norgay” was born as “Namgyal Wangdi” of the whole universe- And became so synonymous in every household Without any rehearse! Through the years as a yak herder, Mountain coolie, and a bearer of loads- This Sherpa reached the summit and unveiled The Everest with trekking codes! The world ushered in the ‘Tenzing Era’ To dignify mountaineering with his vision- And carried on the expeditions to benefit The mankind as a global mission! Today, our beloved Tenzing is resting In the heaven, but his legacy lives on- And reminds his passions for trekking On the mountains from dusk until dawn!
Hello Tenzing, please accept my deepest love And warm respect- Your absence is truly unbelievable And really heartfelt! The mountaineers will always keep A ‘special spot’ just for you- ’Cause your courage was awesome And draws the global view! You achieved your spot through Sacrifice and enormous toll- And they are still vivid around the world In every trekker’s soul! Via untiring patience, you landed on the Everest On May 29th, Nineteen Fifty Three- And pioneered the explorations of “Chomolungma”* to set the trekking spree! Your innocent smiles still stir up The hearts of all- And the mountaineers will remember you Always without your call!
From us today you are wandering Freely very far away- And offering us lessons While keeping your mind at bay! By summitting the “mountain without mercy” You exemplified the human toil- And proved, indomitable spirit against the Fiercest odds, can win on Everest soil! Your victory with Sir Edmund Hillary To reach the highest place on Earth- Is now being celebrated as a Golden Jubilee To sink in the mirth!
Today, we float our happiest minds In joy- moistened tear- And display our affections for you, Tenzing, Without any fear! The trekkers will carry on your untiring efforts With wide-open eye- Without any set back or hesitation And uncompromised vie! The whole world has neatly placed Your name on concrete stone- And the HMI** is highly blessed With every touch of your intriguing bone!
So before conclusion, I love to say this, Although it’s very true as it is- You are the global ambassador for the Sherpa people and an avatar of peace- While your inspirations through spirituality Will shine and we will never miss! Your name is indelible with Mount Everest, And forever will remain that way- Irrespective of expeditions or success, Your image will never sway! You set your feet on the “roof of the world” To hoist the flag against the coldest snow- And made the history, as found in the Everest tales, That we all learn and know!
Today, I salute your courage and sacrifice To bring the mysteries of mountains down- While we celebrate the 50th Anniversary Around your birthplace and Himalayan town! You are an inspiration to the aspiring Mountaineers since your early age- And the tales are found with your expeditions When we flip through the history page! You tamed the untamed Everest, just like the lion Brings down a mouse, as a little prey- To relish the moments in pomp and grandeur With a ritual bray! Tenzing, you are the “Lion of the Mount Everest” And will be regarded forever that way- While the trekkers will keep on trekking, And their motivations will never sway!!!

Himalaya - The Gateway To Inner Peace By Hillol Ray
The splendor of natural beauty is unparalleled and equal to none - At Himalaya, the highest peak, where many trekkers have gone! True spirits of mountaineering brightly glow here at every inch of dust, And attract the global hikers to thrills, or cherish their expedition lust! Thin air and frozen snow churn the impeccable sight - To climb the lonely peaks that trekkers have to fight! Serenity and peace blend nicely and prevail so well - Away from the city life, thoughts will begin to swell!
Feelings of conquering the unknowns hidden in the hikers souls, Are the mantras at Himalaya, to reach and cherish their goals! Scenic beauty and buried dangers trigger so many dreams - When minds start to sink swiftly to watch winding streams! The friendship and guidance of Sherpas provide the inner force- To conquer the quiet Himalaya and explore her energy source!
In a nutshell, and without any hesitation, now I love to tell - That Himalaya is a marvel and resembles the Divine Cell! Her mystery and grace wrap the inner hearts like the merry- go-round - And drench the eyes with tears of joy that nowhere else can be found! Today, for relieving the stress or mental confusions and sway - A visit to the Himalaya will bring the peace and pave the way!!
With the irony of global politics, waves of violence Had swept the world in recent years- And left millions of children displaced or orphaned, And they do now live in fears! The plight of these innocent children Is awesome and cruelties seem to soar- While their deaths from ailments or lack of Medications are pushing the heaven’s door!
The world has been plagued by persistent conflict, And the children are facing the tolls- Irrespective of plans to improve child well being, Nothing rattles the politicians’ souls! Pressing issues of mortality, AIDS, exploitation And poverty can’t be ignored any more- And time has come now for the leaders to think, Before it becomes the global eye sore!
Commitment to create a world for sustainable Development is a crying need of the hour- Based on the democracy, equality, and social justice, To avoid the feelings of sour! Sexual exploitations, impacts of armed conflict, Child labor and abuse are still going on- In the present millennium of our civilized world, That we can see from dusk until dawn!
Investment in the happiness of children Must play in creating a world truly fit for them- Based on the grass-roots view of their needs, And make them shine like a sparkling gem! The children trapped in poverty and war Are being exploited right under parents’ noses- While global actors do admit that future Of these children is not going to be bed of roses!
The challenges faced by the world children today Are too many, and variable in nature- Such as drugs, pregnancy, violence, truancy And dropouts are displaying main caricature! Children of our society are being exposed To the impacts of war or economic sanctions- And international communities are crying foul For inabilities to choke political factions!
Today, may I draw the global attention On the concerns of the world children of all ages- Who, throughout decades, had been the symbol Of human life, as found in history pages! So, schooling for the children is a necessity To make them become seekers of knowledge- And allow them to voice their concerns about lives, In the days of technological edge!
With profound sadness, I confess poverty and inequity Are increasing in an alarming rate- At a time of global wealth with technological advances, And affecting the children’s fate! An emerging knowledge-based economy tells That the shortage of capacity or resource- Is deeply embedded in modern political will, Commitment, priority, vision, and force!
Thus, to create a world fit for children of present And future, I am too anxious to see- The clouds of violence to disappear, and allow them To unlock with a happiness key! Adults must indulge the children to think clearly, And speak publicly in a lucid fashion- While society will learn to hear them with sympathy, Followed by respect and passion!
The daunting task of promoting rights of children In the twenty-first century and after- Truly demands the unwavering attention today, And it’s not a matter of joke or laughter! Children are a priceless treasure, and their well being Must be the underlying cause- To create a prosperous global village, Without a second thought or a political pause!
My restless heart now longs to change the world For the children of today and tomorrow- To assure dignity and security, without any exception, And self-pride without a sorrow! So, may I appeal to all leaders to enforce good intentions And fine words into action now- ’Cause tomorrow may be too late to make a world Fit for children or show an empty vow!
