My beta fish seems very sick. He tries to swim to the bottom and keeps floating to the top and turning on his side. I am afraid he is going to die if I do not do anything about it.. Please give me any info that you have that I can help him.. Thanks so much

Thank SO much for this information. My sister was so distraught about her fish dying, but thankfully she called me (with Internet access!) before she flushed him! Congratulations, you saved Flash's life!!!
We have one teacher that keeps 10 hamsters but is neglectful of cleaning the cages in a timely manner. She has been encouraged by admin but to no avail. She does not seem to notice any odor at all and insists the animals have no smell.
We rotate meetings by room and have agreed unanimously to not use her room for meetings. When she heard this, she took it as a personal affront and is even more difficult to work with than before.
No one goes to her room unless absolutely necessary and even then for only the few seconds it takes to leave something or pick up a student or whatever.
It's amazing to me that this happens. If it's offensive to you then it's probably offensive to her students as well. Poor things, someone needs to speak to administration on their behalf.
I love having pets in my classroom, but one of the reasons is to teach students responsibility. What is never cleaning their cages teaching the students about animal care?
I am doing my Master's research on pets in the classroom, as I feel very strongly about the importance of it all. Yet, this example is definetely the down side.

My hamster is a Russian Dwarf hamster about 1 1/2 years old. His fur has been turning very white and it used to be black. He also has been getting very skinny lately, is this anything serious?

Help!! My hamster is a russian dwarf hamster who is about 1 1/2 years old. He has been turning white (he used to be black),getting skinnier, and hasn't been eating much but drinks a lot. Today he was up all day but wasn't moving. He was still breathing, so I tried to touch him and he didn't do anything. His eyes, I noticed, are swollen shut. I read that if they have wet tail that you should clean his cage thoroughly, so I did. But it doesn't seem to help. Please help me!!!!
My beta fish is named Nemo, I'm pretty sure he's a boy, and we've had him for about 5 years.
But lately, he has been changing color. He used to be a bright blue, and then he changed to red for a while, and then he changed to white and gray, like he was growing pale.
He also hasn't been eating, he lets his food fall to the bottom of his tank. Normally, when I feed him, I make sure he eats at least one of his pellets before I leave him, but he doesn't eat at all now.
He also has problems swimming. He used to be able to swim all over his tank, but now he stays at the bottom. His gills stick out alot, and look purple, or more red, and it looks like he has trouble breathing, like he is very tired.
The last time we changed his water was two days ago, his tank is about 1 gallon size, we use a vase. We don't have any kind of heater for him, or any filtration. He also is the only one in the tank, nothing but him, the water, and the food he leaves at the bottom of the tank. :(
We have had him for a long time now, and I fear that he is dying...but I could be wrong, so can anyone please help us?
On 2/21/07, Aimee...See MoreMy Beta is about 2 yrs old....for the past month or so, he's been hanging out at the bottom of the fish bowl. When he does swim, he seems fine, until his body begins to leans on his side. He cannot hold himself up. He has not lost color yet. Haven't tried any meds nor have I taken him to a vet. Is he dying?

annaI think this will help because we have a beta to and hes getting pretty old. So when we saw him just siting at the bottom we started to put a lamp over him to make the water warmer but there is a cost you have to put more water in the tank evry time it gets to low. So hope this helps you if it does not i dont no what else. Bye
I too have a beta that has a sore it its back. I have been giving him the Melafix, and put him in a 2.5 gallon tank with a light...he is much happier and swimming better. However, the sore does not seem to be healing? Will this ever actually heal? It started out small, but seems to be getting bigger? it is where a top fin would normally be, but it looks white and open? Will other medicine help him, or is he as good as he will get?
Please track down some Tetracycline and give that to your betta. Follow the instructions as carefully as you can. You want to prevent that from becoming infected if it already isn't.
Medicate with tetracycline or maracyn 2-- it's a great antibiotic. Also, add 1/2 teaspoon aquarium salt per gallon of water. It's a great preventative and also a healant.

My betta was on antibiotics(twice) for "Popeye".I guess it didn't work and he lost an eye. We've been noticing that he don't catch his food as usual. I think that its been days since he do not eats.He swims around his bowl all the time , I guess looking for food; but he can't find it. He is fighting for his life, please HELP!

My betta seems to be blind too! I have found that if you put a few pellets in the tank and try to gently guide them toward him (an inch or so in front of him) he will eventually hit the pellet just right and be able to eat. My betta went a long time not eating before we figured out how to get him to eat. Keep trying, he'll figure out how to get it done. It is sad, but he will eventually trust your finger waves and find those pellets! Good Luck

I am fairly certain that he had a secondary infection that attacked his kidneys and he had dropsy as of Saturday.
Thank you for your help. For a few days there I thought we had saved him

Help i have ahd my betta for about 6 months and my 4 yr old loves him, but latley he is not eating and he just kind of floats around in this corner and sometimes it looks like he is having seizers, what could be the problem? Please Help!
Nicole, You can only continue to try to feed him. Maybe try peas-- baby food peas, fed from a toothpick. Keep the water clean, though. Do water changes every 3 days or so.
Let me know how it goes. If his infection improves, he'll feel better and begin eating. aimee

ok, if some people change only a little of their fishes water. it IS possible for it to get sick. any supporters on this comment??? ((i support this comment!))
It's best to change only 20-30% of the water at a time-- this will keep the fish in a more stable environment- but the smaller the tank- the more frequent the water changes should be-- once to twice a week in the smaller bowls. It's also best to keep gravel in the bottom-- for the good bacteria to grow on. Vacuuming the tank is the best method to remove only a fraction of the water. There's a siphon- a "vacuum"-- you can buy that you put in the bowl and, once submerged, quickly suck the dry end of the tube. The water will begin flowing out, so have a recepticle ready to catch the dirty water. When through, pull the vacuum out of the bowl. (and rinse the tube to keep clean).

((i support this comment!)) yes ,I do also agree with this theory ,I have had the same rocks on the bottom of my tank since I set it up 1 year ago and have nothing but infection trouble with my four fish and have lost 4 in the past ,everything from,Dropsy/fungus/issues and am now thinking of changing the old rocks that are the culprit,I use to have plants but have gotten rid of them cause they would eventually die and rot in the roots leaving a dirty mess of issues to clean .
