My betta of 5 years recently died. I purchased 2 new ones and one is not doing very well. He has a little grey under his mouth. The water has bubbles on one side and it has an oily film look to it. I keep cleaning it but nothing seems to help. Any suggestions! Thanks so much!!!!

i have a trio of platies in a 5 gallon aquarium. Lately, i've been seeing them sliding thier bodies on rocks. The behavior is actually pretty recent and rare (ive seen each one do it like only once or twice in the last 4 days). The only reason i worry is that i've seen each one do it. Now, they only choose to do this on the smooth rocks (as opposed to the more jagged surfaces in the tank). My first instinct is to suspect a parasitic illness such as ich. Despite my efforts to confirm this, i see no other symptoms that would say it was parasitic. They are all, in fact, in very good shape, display no pale coloring, show no visible symptoms, and eat eagerly during feedings. Any second opinions on what this behavior could be?
I do know that when my bettas have had some parasitic infestation, they've done the same-- even when you cannot see the parasite! I'd treat with maracide or methelyne blue-- (maracide is sold at petco and petsmart)-- remove the carbon in the filter and treat as directed. It works! Let me know how it goes. aimee

Recently my fish, Saphire, has been acting different. He doesn't swim properly. He will go up to the surface get a breath of air (that's what it seems like) and them go back down to the bottom, and then tilt over to his side (almost). I don't even think he's eating anything because the food that I put in for him just sits there. When he tilts to his side he will put his fin out and "prop" himself up. Also, when he swims, it looks like he's struggling to swim (I hardly ever see him move).
I don't know what the problem is, and I was wondering if you can help me figure it out!?
I never know what to diagnose those symptoms with-- but I always assume it's a bacterial infection-- when my betta is not acting normal. All you can do is keep the water clean and possibly, medicate with something that's a great all- around med. like maracyn 2.

Jessica, After reading the other posting-- I think it may be a swim bladder issue, possibly. You might want to use baby food peas instead of cooked peas-- dip a toothpick in and feed from it.
Keep the water clean.

Help! My Betta was healthy and beautiful, ate well and was active. After a recent water change, she lost all balance and equilibrium, was swimming erratically and doing someraults. Now she completely floats at the top on her side and if spooked, will swim jerkily and then resume her float. She is not bloated, and was unable to greab pellets off the top as she kept "missing" them. Now she doesn't even try! Pet store told me she has 2 sacks on each side and one may have been punctured?? HELP!!
first off, do a water change and don't add any aquarium salt (if you normally do). When they're tilted on one side, it's a sure swim bladder issue (this controls their equilibrium) and 9 times out of 10 (from my experience)- it's caused by bloating due to constipation. SO-- the treatment is-- baby food peas (from a toothpick)-- this will help clear her intestinal tract and relieve the bloating and hopefully, fix the problem. If she won't eat the peas (you'll learn that right away)-- then I would add some epsom salt (it's a laxative-- even for humans, when consumed). Add it directly to the water at about 1/8- and up to 1/4 teaspoon per gallon-- you could use more, but only for a couple hours (I've never used more than 1/4 teaspoon per gallon for a couple days max). Either of those treatments should cure your betta. After she gets back to normal-- feed fewer pellets (I'd only feed pellet food as the bloodworms seem to cause constipation).
Let me know how it goes! aimee

My class is about to earn a class pet for having good behavior. Is there any kind of parent permission sheet that anyone knows of to OK their kids to interact with a pet?
My Neon has grown a big belly It looks empty but with couple of small round bubbles on left side /like air .It has since stopped growing larger and I have transferd two of them into hospital tank ,yes them ,the other one has what looks like mouth fungus and this is secont time in Hospital tank for him,I have soft water and added Aquarium salt with Erythromycin 100mg ea 24hr.Big Belly is OK colour and swimming normally ,other is the same .They seem to be doing better in new tank ,Any sugestions as too what cause?

Please help. My beta Jorge is sick or something. He lies at the bottom of his bowl on his side. I just changed his water two weeks ago and i use ph balance solution. Within a week the water became foggy and smelly. What can i do?
I would do a water change again and add 1/2 teaspoon aquarium salt (it's a good preventative to certain bad bacteria) and also add the dechlorinator. Never mind the ph balance solution. Maybe he needs some fresh water. You may consider picking up some maracyn 2 to treat for a bacterial infection (internal). It won't hurt.
Let me know how it goes! aimee

My beta- Walley, has not had a bowel movement in over 2 weeks. He's very lethargic and doesn't swim around too much. He doesn't have a problem going to the bottom of his bowl, but he's usually at the top.So, I don't think he has that swim bladder disease. He hasn't eaten in about 3 days either. I've heard of using peas, is this a good option???
Peas (baby food from a toothpick) are a great solution to constipation if he eats them! He may have dropsy (swim bladder disease) which you'd treat with an antibiotic, but you'll know he's sick-- does he eat? If not, and if he's just laying around more than usual, he's probably sick with dropsy. Try the peas and see how it goes. aimee
