I teach a writing seminar class to (mostly) 9th graders. It is a half year class, a requirement for graduation. It is supposed to work on their writing skills, particularly essay writing. In the past I have been lucky to get one small group and another filled with honors students who liked writing. This year I have 17 squirrely 9th graders who aren't that interested in writing. There a few good kids who are but the majority are not. Consequently, it is nearly an impossible task to get them to quietly write for an length of time.
I am getting some help with discipline from a behavioral person at my school and hopefully that will help with that issue.
***However, I think the class also needs more structure. Anyone have ideas on how on a structure or routine? They need lots of little activities... Also, ideas on where to find some online-- like grammar or writing exercises? I am swamped with prep and this is the last thing I need right now. We are doing journalism, poetry and creative writing before the end of the term. Thanks.
I am a first year writing/grammar teacher. Teaching fourteen years at the elementary level, 7th and 8th Graders have left me feeling quite overwhelmed. They have either lost their "zest" for writing,or have never had an interest. Testing is in February for the 8th Graders. I am struggling daily to keep it interesting, and encouraging them to rise to the challenge. Discouragement has set in, and I'm feeling overwhelmed. Any words of encouragement or direction? In short...HELP!!!!!!!
How do you teach consonant clusters in a way that is really meaningful to second graders? We use HM, and their "script" is completely horrible! This is my first year at 2nd grade, and I don't know how to make consonant clusters more kid-friendly. Also, are there any "rules" to go with consonant clusters, like bossy r for 'ar' or when two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking? Those always seem to help things "stick" in the kids' brains. Thanks for your help! Erin C. P. S. Yes, I'm x-posting this. : )
My daughter has been in private school from k-9th grade, We decided to move her this year to public school. Normally she has been a mostly B student, but the transistion to 10th grade in public school has been more difficult.
I think her main struggle is the ability to stay focused and organized. In addition, I think she is almost phobic of test taking. As a side note, her father has dyslexia and her brother is ADHD. How do I tell if these problems are a learning diablility or just laziness? Should I have her tested? And if so what kinds of tests?

Hello I'm a parent of 4 daughters, ages: 21.5, 19.5, 9.5 & almost 7 year olds. My 2 oldest daughters have both graduated from High School. As family members we try to help our children every night with their homework...But all 4 of us adults can't help my 9.5 year old daughter with this english (The Shurley Method) can any of you here help us to understand this so we can help her. She is on the Level 4 Student Book, Unit 1: Exercise 1: Classify Each sentence. 1______ Tammy, Lana, and Brent jogged down the road. She has SNVPL in the blank, CSN over Tammy, CSN over Lana,C over and, CSN over Brent, V over jogged a /between jogged & down, a P over down, A over the, OP over road. and a D at the end of the sentence. What in the world does all this mean??? None of this makes ANY sense to any of us and my girls graduated in 2003 & 2004 and still can't help them...Please can someone help us to understand this. Can you tell us what the abbreviations is and what each one means?? We can't help her at all and I hate to see her fail in school for us not knowing how to help her at home... Unlike many parents out here we have our children sit down and to figure out their homework. What does the CSN, C, P, A, OP, PPA, SN, I, HV, CV,ADV. We would apprecaite any help on this. I work in a nyc public school in the Bronx and we don't have any reading textbooks for our children to use. They have done away with any type of readers. Please if you have any that your school is getting rid of would you please donate them. I work in a low income school. If you have any readers (textbooks that have stories with questions at the end of the stories,,second grade level preferably) please let me know. I will find a way to ship them. Probably will come out of my pocket, but my kids really need this resource. Thanks so much and I can be reached at 914 469 1880 thankyou. This would make a great lesson for your kids because they are donating to kids less fortunate than themselves.
