Actually, the only course titles that you capitalize are actual language courses, eg. English, French, Spanish, etc. or course specific titles eg. Language Arts 101. Language arts does not have capitals.

I am going to be teaching Reading,Spelling,Handwriting, and English (grammar & comp) to 4th, 5th, and 6th graders. Any ideas on learning centers, or other activities for there age? I've found plenty for the primary grades, and I'm trying to think of how I could adapt some of those for older kids. I'm having trouble finding ones specifically geared toward the older classes. Thanks for any suggestions.
I recently read an article in The Reading Teacher titled R5: The Sustained Silent Reading makeover. . . from the Oct. 2006 magazine. It discusses how a classroom teacher and a university instructor "made over" the SSR time in the classroom so that students could be held accountable for the reading they were supposed to do. If you don't have access to the magazine they published a book that goes into greater detail about the process. You can do a search for R5 In Your Classroom. Two of the elements include partnering up two students who share an "i wonder. . ." or "Wow" moment from the book. Their partner then shares that observation with the class. The bottom line is that this process holds the reader accountable for the reading time because they know that they will need to have a response to share with a peer. Maybe someone else out there has tried this and can explain the process in a clearer way. Good luck! Julie
