We would like to share photos of your Dr. Seuss/Read Across America theme activities in the February issue of Teachers.Net Gazette.
Do you have photos of special snacks, bulletin boards, or Dr. Seuss book theme crafts you've used in your classroom that we could share with the Teachers.Net community?
Please email photos to [email removed].
Note: photos should not include students' faces.
We look forward to hearing from those who enjoy sharing with teaching colleagues all over the world! Thank you!
Oh, we would love to be able to post your classroom photo tour in the Gazette, so if you have one online and are willing to allow us to share it in the Teachers.Net Gazette, please email asap.
Greetings! I'm looking for activities or events to do for the Read Across America program that is geared towards Jr. High School students (grades 6-8). Anyone have any ideas?
I would also like to have posters made of the top 20 books from our school library (based on circulation numbers) as well as a top 20 list of YA literature books in 2008 (from my library networking site).
I am looking for ideas to get the kids reading more, discussing books, etc. I was thinking that we could open the media center in the morning before school from 7:15 - 7:30 to give book talks/read to the kids for a week or two.
I also thought that we could have some sort of Maud Hart Lovelace reading competition that would start in February and run through the end of March.

Our school is considering a web meeting where we can connect with another school and read across the internet. Is anyone else doing this or interested in doing this?

I'm interested. We have a K-5 building, 615 students. Are you thinking about a grade in particular?

I'm a 2nd year teacher and I'm responsible for this day since I'm the upper elementary reading teacher. I've never lead any school events before and I'm a little nervous about being completely responsible for it.
I wasn't going to go w/a Dr. Seuss theme since kids are already very familiar w/those books and they need to be introduced to other great authors.
I think I might incorporate reader's theater in the day. Any suggestions?
We post a large map on the map hallway of the school. As students read a book, take an Accelerated Reader Quiz (test comprehension) students place a label on the map (label has teacher name on it). Each class tries to work around the map in alphabetical order (post a list of states next to map). We have PTO volunteers "man" the map and help students locate states. The kids loves our "Read Across America"
In observance of the upcoming Read Across America Day (Dr. Seuss birthday) on March 2, and Earth Day April 22, we'll be giving away books from my personal bookshelf to some lucky members of those two mailring groups.
To be in on the fun you'll have to be a member of the mailring list where I'll post the details. So, use the link below or click on "Mailrings" at the top of any Teachers.Net page, and subscribe now!
