The Smithsonian American Art Museum is working to provide great resources for teachers all over the country. We're looking for 4th grade teachers to pilot our newest attempt.
We have created a website based on an artwork in our collection that depicts the United States and encourages students to relate their knowledge of state history in creating their own state-specific collage. The site has had a soft launch and we’re looking forward to seeding with content from classes that have studied state history this year! If you have a chance, please take a look, the web address is:

It is a simple concept. An artist named Nam June Paik created a video sculpture of the United States with neon surrounding each state. The states are filled with his representation in the form of single channel videos that are played on televisions in each state. Students are asked to create their own static collage of their state making decisions about what they’d use to visually represent the place they live based on what they have learned about their home state.
I’d be honored if your classes would be some of the first (and the very first in your state) to try it! If you have questions or would like to know more, please email me ([email removed].
Sincerely,
Patrick Martin Education Specialist Smithsonian American Art Museum (202) 633-8539

Looking for classrooms and libraries to participate in Spice It up a Notch with Nutmeg! , a collaborative, authentic, engaging, book project for students in grades 4 through 8. In this project, students read and discuss the Nutmeg Book Award nominees online and contribute to wiki pages for each individual book. Students participate in the experience of collaborate writing.

It doesen't hurt to ask. If someone has already developed something, I would love to see what you have done. It would save me a lot of time. You all know how much extra time we put in already so it just makes sense to ask all of you.
I have done a great deal of internet search. I have found some useful articles and an example for history, but nothing really close to what I need.
I'm looking for seven (preferably 4th grade) classrooms throughout California who would be interested in hosting a Travel Buddy for one month during the 2008-2009 school year.
Your class would be responsible for writing daily in Alby the Bulldog's journal, collecting souvenirs, and providing as much information about your region as possible to help us better understand the wonderful state in which we live in.
As the teacher, you would be required to pay for shipping our Travel Buddy to his next location as well as emailing and/or posting photographs/journal entries regularly during Alby's visit.
This is a very exciting project for the kids and all those involved need your 100% commitment. The project would start in September in my class which is in Anaheim, CA (A Coastal Region) and then move monthly to a different region.
October - Desert Region November - Mountain Region December - Valley Region January - Return Home Feburary - Coastal Region March - Desert Region April - Mountain Region May - Valley Region June - Return Home
I'd love to have this set up before school starts in September. Feel free to email me with any questions. I hope you'll join us.
