I'm looking for seven (preferably 4th grade) classrooms throughout California who would be interested in hosting a Travel Buddy for one month during the 2008-2009 school year. Your class would be responsible for writing daily in Alby the Bulldog's journal, collecting souvenirs, and providing as much information about your region as possible to help us better understand the wonderful state in which we live in.
As the teacher, you would be required to pay for shipping our Travel Buddy to his next location as well as emailing and/or posting photographs/journal entries regularly during Alby's visit.
This is a very exciting project for the kids and all those involved need your 100% commitment. The project would start in September in my class which is in Anaheim, CA (A Coastal Region) and then move monthly to a different region.
October - Desert Region November - Mountain Region December - Valley Region January - Return Home Feburary - Coastal Region March - Desert Region April - Mountain Region May - Valley Region June - Return Home
I'd love to have this set up before school starts in September. Feel free to email me with any questions. I hope you'll join us.
Our project centers around a stuffed puppy named Ollie! He wants to travel across the country meeting children from each state. We are looking for a participating class from EACH OF THE 50 STATES!
Ollie is based on the story of a real dog named Owney that was adopted by Postal workers in the late 1800's. He traveled around the country on trains from post office to post office.
NEW THIS YEAR… Ollie will race his brother Oscar, to see who can visit 25 states first! Both collie puppies will be traveling at the same time (one east to west, and the other west to east). They will have time to visit each class for ONE DAY ONLY. Be sure to pack a ton of fun into your special day with Ollie or Oscar! We want to hurry them along on their journey so they can race across the United States and visit all 50 states before school lets out for summer!!
Each class will send a postcard to the other 49 classes after Ollie or Oscar has visited. Include at least one paragraph about your state so we can learn about where you live (large labels work great). Please mail your postcards within one week of his visit.
To keep all project members (and classes) up-to-date with Ollie and Oscar’s adventures, please send 1-2 paragraphs to me by email describing what your class did with Ollie or Oscar. Include digital pictures and/or links to your classroom or school web pages! I will add this to the online travel journal, so all classes can keep track of their travels!
Here’s a quick summary: ++1 day visit from stuffed collie puppy (either Ollie or his twin brother Oscar)... mailed either same day or next day (labels provided)--with delivery confirmation/package tracker emailed to me ++chance for your class to sign "Friends' Journal" and add optional souvenir to his box ++postcard exchange (with all 50 participants) ++books about US Postal Mascot, Owney included in project folder ++journal entry and photos emailed to me and posted on online journal/website ++LOTS of fun and learning for teachers and students!!

Hello! I would love to join a traveling buddy group. I woul dlike to either host a buddy or have one of my buddies travel. Can't wait to hear from someone!
:) Kari S.
P.S. If someone could give me the information on how to do this project, I wouldn't mind setting up my own traveling group.

Your class would be responsible for writing daily in Alby the Bulldog's journal, collecting souvenirs, and providing as much information about your region as possible to help us better understand the wonderful state in which we live in.
In return, I'll make a PDF file of his journal which you can print out or display on the computer for the kids at the end of the project. Also, when he arrives at your school, he will have some goodies to share with the kids as well more information about our region. I'll also be using a website to keep track of his journey.
As the teacher, you would be required to pay for shipping our Travel Buddy to his next location as well as emailing and/or posting photographs/journal entries regularly during Alby's visit.

ShelleeHI! I am in the Valley region of CA. (Bakersfield to be exact), and I think the project you're describing sounds really cool! Do you still need someone from the Valley
JenniferWe have participants from S. Carolina, Maryland, and Oklahoma so far. I am hoping to have a total of six or seven states. Please let me know ASAP if you would like to join us. Jennifer

I think this is a fantastic idea. I was introduced to Flat Stanley last year. I was actually wondering how my class could become involved with this project. I have selected two dates below. Let me know if this will be good. I will also make sure to take good care of all of the materials you send.
Rosalind Deets Newport News Virginia Second Grade Teacher > September 15- 23 > September 29- October 10
Each class participating in the project will receive 5 traveling buddy guests throughout the year (monthly rotation schedule). Classrooms will be responsible for journal entries, emails, and photographs.
As the teacher, you would be responsible for the mailing dates, procedures, and cost of shipping.
The project will start in mid-September and end in late April/early May. Please consider the time, energy, and cost before you register. This is a very exciting project and we need 100% commitment from all those involved. :)

Id like to do one of these with our school mascot, a panther. Is this similar to the flat stanley project? I teach first grade and am looking for someone to participate with me.
AnnaMelissa, Where are you located? We are in Wisconsin. We start school after Labor Day and with first grade it's good to wait a bit until we get into a routine--but I think this would be a good activity for the students. Let me know what you think. Anna
