Is there any place in Anchorage that I should NOT rent in? I have just been looking in the Anchorage Daily News for homes, but I am not sure where is a good place and where I might not want to look. I have 5 children that will be attending school there and would like a safe neighborhood, obviously. I don't know anything about the area. If anyone could give me any information, it would be helpful. AKteacher has helped me a bit, but could anyone suggest areas? Thanks

Here's a list of schools (and I DO NOT mean any slurs towards the wonderful teachers who teach at these schools, some of whom are friends and some are people whose reputations are stellar but these are low SES, transient areas) to avoid: Mountain View, Muldoon, Creekside, Ptarmigan, Wonder Park, Fairview, Airport Heights, Williwaw, Nunaka Valley, Tyson, Government Hill (unless you put your kids in the spanish immersion program and that's an option only for K and 1st). My best advice, rent a house in an area that is predominantly owner occupied, not rental units.

Don't rent without visiting....one of the funny things about Anchorage is that you can have pockets of disaray in the midst of otherwise nice neighborhoods. It's pretty amazing how it can be one way and two blocks later you don't even want to turn around - you just want to back away. So a general address doesn't mean much.

You might clarify what you mean by larger cities.....Anchorage 265,000, Fairbanks, about 80,000, Juneau about 40,000........after that it drops off pretty quick. By lower 48 standards we only have one "larger city".
It looks likely there won't be much in the way of layoffs in Anchorage....attrition and some funding from the legislature will probably carry things...but it isn't a great outlook at the moment.

I am collecting data about enviromental knowledge, opinions, habits and preparedness of 7 - 15 years old (or/and older) students. For this purpose I have composed a survey which can be accessed at
I just attended a Teacher's Job Fair in Colorado and approached the AK booth for the Lower Yukon District out of curiosity. My husband and I have talked about moving to Alaska but never seriously considered it until I looked into this opportunity. They are interviewing us BOTH for positions (his is in an unrelated field) and we're cautiously excited about the opportunity. It seems like a great package deal and a fantastic experience but I have read some negative things. Can someone with experience pass on any information? We would both GREATLY appreciate it!
This board is intended for education professionals practicing in Alaska. If that's you, please stop in. It is meant to help share across the state and help teachers organize.
I am currently graduating from college with a degree in special education, elementary education, and ESOL certification. I want to move to Alaska to become a bush teacher, but don't know where the "bush" is. Also (not trying to imply that I am doing it for the money) but are there districts that pay more than others? Finally, is it difficult to get a job in Alaska? I am a rugged outdoorsman, and looking to teach in a diverse setting, that is challenging as well as fun. If you could provide any information, it is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

The bush. It can be wilderness. It is some of the most remote villages you will ever experience. I have taught there and lived there and though rewarding in some ways, VERY challenging in most ways.
Here is a website with limited info on villages/communities. Can't really paint the real picture for you but it's a start.
I'm part of an exchange that is in its 3rd year. For the upcoming school year we are looking for classrooms from the following states. Our members this year include schools in Germany, Canada & Ecuador. Anyone interested can contact Marian at [email removed]
Thank you!! We look forward to having you in our exchange!
We are organizing a postcard exchange for next school year and need someone from AK. Email me if interested. I need your name, school name and address, and grade. BE SURE to send me an email address so I can contact you.
Please email me ASAP if you are interested in participating in an established INTERNATIONAL Post Card Exchange. Please don't miss this opportunity to interact with and leave about your peers around the world. This is an activity both you and your students will love!
I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE IT IF YOU WOULD becoming a member of an established international post card exchange? If yes, please let me know. I am the organizer of an established international post card exchange. WE HAVE NEVER had a participant from your state and we would LOVE to have an opportunity to exchange post cards with you! I hope to hear from you soon. Thanks! :o)
