Just wondering if anyone has info on jobs in ASD. My husband and I are wanting to move up this summer. I am a HS English teacher and he is both Social Studies and ESE. I am wondering specifically about tips for the interview process and availability of jobs. Thanks
I don't know much about high school jobs. I would highly recommend attending one of the job fairs if you are serious about teaching up here. Check this website:

This is the process I went through to get an elementary position. I went to a job fair in the Lower 48 and had a prescreening interview. As soon as that was over, I was selected for the initial interview. They offered me a job, and I signed the necessary paperwork. I believe the paper they gave me was called an "intent to hire." This made me very nervous, so I called the school district several times to verify that I really had a job before I packed everything up and moved. They assured me I did. The next process is waiting for principals to call you for interviews from their school. Once they select you, you will accept the position and wait for HR to approve it.
This may be a little different for high school since your job is more specific.
Make sure you have an Alaskan certificate and are highly qualified. Be aware of the cost of living before you move.
I read in the project section of this site and found a little information on the exchange. You should write to [email removed].

Before I start, jj please tell me you are not a teacher.
I have been following this strand for the last year since I left "The Slope" and am sad to see how little has changed. It makes one wonder if anyone in the central office is really interested in educating children. I know the district had a hard time filling teaching positions. In even the most desirable locations positions were still open well after school started. ABC teacher is right in that the kids are for the most part great to work with. The paycheck, given the cost of living was not so impressive. I'm sorry ABC didn't have a better experience with their colleagues. That was not my experience. The North Slope veteran teachers I worked with were great people who were doing the best they could given the absurd situation they had to deal with. Overall, I had few complaints about the people I worked directly with including my Principal, my colleagues or my students. The problem from a teaching standpoint had much to do with the central office's obsession with assessment, sports, technology and creating tension among teachers, all of which (except the tension creating) are great in appropriate quantities. That being said, at the high school level, the interruptions from sports and the many ridiculous central office driven assessments made it impossible to actually teach.
Another thing I never quite figured out was the pay for performance plan. I apparently was successful and I actually made some money from it. I have not the slightest clue as to what I did to "earn" it. Except that about $1,000 of it was because 95% of my students liked me and thought I was a good teacher. (according to the surveys we had them fill out)Some of my students did increase their test scores which may have been a factor as well. Luckily for me, this year, I get to do the same thing with a better school district and more real money in my bank account at the end of the day. The ironic part of the performance pay for me was that I would have taught effectively regardless of the extra pay and would still be teaching there if it weren't for the low base pay and the insane politics in the district.
I am tempted to comment extensively on sloper's postings but they are so absurd that little needs to be said other than he/she is so clueless that it has to be a central office administrator who has nothing better to do than pose as a midnight blogger. C'mon, Sloper, get busy making your district a desirable place for kids to learn and teachers to teach. Leave the blogging to the ones who know what is really going on. A lot more substance and a lot less propaganda will go a long way in that direction. What you guys have done is get rid of most of your best teachers to remove a couple of bad apples.
It looks like the North Slope Borough is still a bad place to teach. So, my original advice stands, Don't reward their anti-teacher attitudes. Work somewhere else. As a veteran teacher, I strongly advise new teachers to not risk tarnishing your careers by starting there. Finally, for my former colleagues, including my former Principal, (who I know will be reading this) you are all the best, it was great working with you. Hope things change soon!
Hi, I'm participating in a postcard exchange and i would really love to have some classrooms in Alaska to participate to represent the boroughs in Alaska. I'm from a small town in North Carolina about this big . and i would love to have my kids learn more about Alaska Please send me any information on teachers that might be interested. Please contact me at [email removed]
Hello. I am a special ed teacher in Albuquerque N.M. and would very much like to visit Alaska again (I worked in Seward for 4 summers in a cannery). I will go to any location and am Sp Ed k-12 certified w/ an ELL endorsement. Second question, or maybe it should be my first is, does Alaska accept out of state licenses?
Hello all who take the time to read this chat. From my pserspective, it goes from bad to worse...I notice that next year recruits are right out of college, the best to you for your courage but watch out! The old teachers do not support and welcome the new. They have seen newbies come and go and know attachments don't last. Your job can be 95% good but only the 5% mistakes will be taken into consideration. If you do good, administrators take the credit, if you do bad you'll be scape goated. Old teachers also line up the students for their classrooms with the model students before you arrive. You get the worst, you get the kids who are presently in law suits because they tried to kill the tachers and other students! I kid you not..The administrators are incompetent, arrogant and wicked. They openly play favortism and are only their to protect their paychecks. There is also a saying up here that teachers are a dime a dozen, one of the reasons new teachers are replaced every year for past three years...You also get treated with disrespect and inconsideration. Morale is bad throughout this system and there is nothing that is going to change it. The school board, the state, nothing outside yourself will offer any support or condolences to your profession at NSBSD. The first half of the year, you will be treated ok but aftr that first board meeting in January, beware you are on the block and will be treated like they want you out...Teachers are asked to resign, informing them that it will look better on their resumes, then fired. Don't let them fool you, they only do this because they don't want to pay unemployment benefits and it looks better to them and the board that teachers just don't want to return...Big paychecks bring you up here? Take another look, average cost for housing is $1000 a month for rent and utilities...Food is over $500/transportation to and from school by Taxis/not to mention the cost of moving up here for one year and you can double that as after the year, it will cost you to move back with the regrets that they ever came up here. There have been wives of principals who say that this is the most corrupted administration every witnessed and would prefer to leave the district and some are...Due to the low morale of teachers which also effects the students. Last month the school had to be closed for the day because there were too many teachers who went to the Job Fair in Anchorage. The students do not like to come to school, they have no long term relationships with teachers, new face every year..and would rather spend their time sitting in front of the local grocery store, stealing pop and candy and smoking dope. This week end we had over ten garage sales in the local teacher housing...people who have been up here say they can't wait to get out and hope to never come back again. Good luck to the new teachers, please keep the post alive and let us know how your experiences have been.

Although I am not a teacher in any of the schools I have seen how the NSBSD abuses it's power. I came to Barrow with high hopes of finding a small close knit community that I could become a part of. Instead I am frustrated and angered by the corruption and greed that I find. Inupiaq values? Where are they? Sorry but I haven't yet seen them in the people I have met (maybe I am just meeting the wrong people) I cannot get over the fact that the people who hold the power choose to abuse it and for the life of me I can't figure out to what end. They are not helping their children, their community and honestly I cannot really see how they are benifitting themselves. Are these people just so bitter that they find joy in the suffering of others? Perhaps inflicting pain and worry is their sole aim. With that said I don't intend to leave any time soon. Instead I want to help make a difference. Maybe there is a way I can put them to shame. Show a good example of Inupiat values even though I am not known as Inupiat. When I get angry I fight and I hope I fight for a just cause. I would like to see others take up the cause and challenge the 'powers that be' whether openly or not, it doesn't matter if it's for a positive end. I do empathise with those who arrive here hoping for a better life only to find corruption, ill manners and flagrant rejection by individuals who don't care about anyone but themselves.

As part of a graduate research project, I need to gather data from current teachers. I’m researching the use of technology in the classroom and what factors affect it. If you could just take a few minutes to complete my survey, I’d appreciate it. The survey is online and has 15 questions.
