I am interested in teaching in the NSBSD. I have read all the posts here, along with other chat sites regarding this area of Alaska. I would love to hear from someone that is still teaching in the NSBSD on their thoughts of signing a contract there.
I wonder if the superintendent (sounds like 'sloper' to me) is already being tailored for his prison garb? Now that there is the possibility of millions (yes that's right, millions) missing, the liklihood of the state sending in an accountant to analyze the books, and the board's decision not to renew his contract (WHAT TOOK SO LONG!), one has to wonder what other surprises are in store because of this man. It is truly beyond comprehension how the board, borough, and the state let this guy destroy our school district. The warning signs were there from the start based on his experience in WY. The teachers who have stayed should be given merit raises for what they have had to put up because of this man. It is difficult enough to teach in the 'bush'. But to have your supposed leader's ongoing behavior of teacher transfers and firings (both classified and certificated) shows the dedication of the people who have stayed. I for one will be cheering when this man leaves. I will also be saying a prayer that the next superintendent hired is investigated more thoroughly than this guy was.
Does anybody have anymore information on an investigation or that the NSB super has not been re-hired? Isn't it pretty early in the year for contracts? Any verification through published sources like Alaskool or the Arctic Sounder? Thank you
My friend and I are starting to scope out teacher positions for the 2009-10 school year. We are not new to Alaska and are considering the top of the world.
I am a science/math teacher 7-12 and she is a K-12 generalist. Has anyone heard of a school up there where a couple of positions will be opening?

Things like how your relationship with locals is also impacts hunting situation. Some folks open to females hunting, others not so much, very variable.
Smallest school on the slope is Katovik.

I believe the teacher that was kicked out ...was kicked out because not only did he hunt as soon as he got off the plane...but He also cut down trees from a locals land...then built a cabin on another locals land...without permission. I think he was under the impression that the land surrounding the village was "free". He is a really decent man, but I would have suggested to him that he make connections with the community and socilaise a bit before being so brazen. It's odd how so much is misunderstood because they fail to ask around.....a shame really.
If you are a hunter then it would be a wonderful tool to use to connect with local people. It is something the kids can relate to. The best way to indtroduce yourself to the hunting community is to ask to go along on a hunt. Hunting revolves around the time of the year, and varies village by village. Ask what they are hunting in that time of the year. This gives you a chance to get a feel for the local rythym. Be aware that it will take some time. Me and my other half (both of us are hunters) take teachers with us often enough..along with other non-locals. Have your hunting liscenses in line and you will totally enjoy it!
