...See MoreIsn't this approach a bit knuckle-headed. Do they really think they can hide their turn-over? Doesn't the school board approve applicants?
Can they count and do simple arithmetic? Number of applications I approved, divided by the number of teachers in my district times 100 equals turnover percentage. Not exactly rocket science.
If I were a school board member and my central office tried something like that I would do my best to get them all dismissed. The board doesn't have a prayer of solving their problems if the people they trust to run the district are not providing accurate information.
Assuming of course that the board actually has the students' best interests at heart, which isn't always the case.

I am thinking things are about to start getting better in the next year. Maybe I am a bit too optimistic, but I like Alaska and have to hope that it will get better.

I for one may never return to the field. I had such a rotten experience at the school district which threw me out on trumped up charges so they could cheat me out of my retirement benefits, I have serious doubts I would ever go back to public education.

So this explains why NSB just listed teaching positions on Alaska Teacher Placement.
My paltry linguistic abilities cannot begin to describe the sheer genius of their management methods. They should be quarantined, so there's no chance of this spreading.

Teaching in Alaska can be an amazing and rewarding experience. However, it does have drawbacks. Uneducated, unethical school board members are just one of the obstacles. You also have a quagmire of tribal, local, and state politics to negotiate. Beware the politics! Add to all of this the high expenses involved in operating 'bush' schools and the inevitable corruption that occurs when a lot of money is spent with very little oversight... the children often pay a heavy price.
Don't despair, there are also some incredibly focused districts out there that really have it together. They value their teachers and will move heaven and earth to help you to be successful.
You are now thinking "How do I find one of these wonderful districts?" That's a tough one to answer, but I believe that teacher turnover is one of the keys. If a district is experiencing high turnover it is often an indication that something is amiss. I can give you the following advice when seeking a job.
1.) Good teachers are a commodity. When you are being interviewed by a school district, remember it is a two-way street. You are also interviewing them.
2.) Ask about teacher turnover. Be sure to clarify teacher turnover versus staff turnover. Some districts like to provide the illusion of stability by including support staff in their calculations.
3.) Watch the ATP website. If teachers are flocking away from a district you should ask questions.
4.) With all of this in mind, high turnover can also be a result of a cadre of teachers that have been there for years and are now retiring. Ask questions!
Also keep in mind that a troubled district will eventually hit bottom and it will then need good teachers more than ever to pull it back up.
w.Thanks. Also seems as though this year is a little different from the past - am only supposing. Activity never completely dies down, either, on ATP Job Bank.
Our time will include a few days in Anchorage and an afternoon-evening and another evening with nothing scheduled in Fairbanks. There are also a couple of afternoon-evenings of free time at Denali.
Can you recommend what to be sure to see/do and what to be sure to skip to make best use of our time?
We are hikers, history and natural history buffs. My brother and his traveling companion are not hikers but are willing to walk. They are both antique dealers so history is interesting to them.
watcheri've always felt bad that no one responded to you (but perhaps you got private msg) when i've checked back here once a month at the most ! i hope you have found [link removed].

This survey concerns all teachers; novice and veteran.
Please take time to complete this survey. It is for a thesis statement. I would appreciate your thoughts and opinions. Results will be posted at the end of July, 2009.
