OMGYes, that teacher was annoying and petty. You gave up way more than he/she did, and with way less complaining. I hope for your school's sake that someone calls that teacher's bluff and he/she will have to quit.
I am planning on going to the ATP job fai...See MoreI am currently in the process of getting a teaching certificate in the state of Idaho (I will graduate in May). I am going to be able to teach secondary sciences (chemistry, biology, physics, and earth science) and I was wondering how difficult it might be for a new teacher to find a job in Alaska.
I am planning on going to the ATP job fair in Seattle in April. Do you have any advice? Are there certain areas in Alaska that would be recommended to teach in over others?
I would appreciate any help that you could give me! Thank you for your time!
I am in elementary, so don't really know what the high school job market is like.
The cost of living in Anchorage is high. It's tough to make it on a teacher salary. The AK TRS retirement is not a good package at this point. The union is trying to help resolve the issue though.
If you were to go to the bush, you would probably be teaching just about everything and anything. If you have any interest in basketball, you will probably end up coaching a team. Your class size is likely to be small, but you may have some challenging behaviors to deal with. Most likely you will be living with another teacher. Teachers tend to get together socially quite frequently, so there is a tight bond with them. Flying to and from the bush can be quite expensive, but your district will probably give you one or two round trip tickets a year from Anchorage.
Why do you want to move to Alaska? Do you have family? Some of these answers may help determine where is the right place for you.
I work in Middle School and I know we always need Science teachers. I think you can find a job withouth even going to the Job Fair. Subbing in the district and getting a feel of which school is the school for you, in my opinion, is much better way of finding a job in the State you want to live and work.
I had a really tough time finding a teaching job. I have an early childhood education degree and have recently become interested in teaching in Alaska. I was wondering what are some of the financial benefits of teaching in Alaska and how good are my chances of finding a job in an urban area with my major?
