I was just wondering how your schools did as far as this go? What are some of the things that your schools/districts are doing to help you achieve this? Mine made it, and we probably helped this by identifying our struggling readers early and using interventions to help them progress at a positive rate. Liz/AK
Sounds like the towns I lived in before coming to Anchorage. I know that back where I grew up, only three of the schools made AYP, the school where all of the most skilled and experienced teachers teach (highest income students also), and the two charter schools. I haven't even asked about what caused the rest of them not to make it. The politicians do not have a clue to how to improve education. They ignore teachers. There has bee little teacher involvement in what is being done to us.
Would it do any good if the teachers of the state marched on Little Rock??? The point being to say to the politicians, "Hey guys and gals, we have suggestions that will work, listen to us."
It is frustrating, and when they get threw, I fear it will be worse.
Do we care enough to at least try and make a statement?
Not to be a smart alek or anything, but have you figured out yet that you are on the Alaska chatboard and not the Arkansas chatboard? AR=Arkansas AK=Alaska AL=Alabama. Hey John, The year off was amazing (of course.) I wasn't ready to come "home" but Kev wanted to get back to work. Now we're in Las Vegas and happy here. I am the Lit Specialist at a terrific school. If you're in Vegas look us up! [email removed]
Hope your year is wonderful! Rita

We will contact SS and AK TRS on Monday with questions but what can anyone tell us personally about the following warning we received?

I am soliciting information from individuals, teachers, administrators or parents that have had some experience with the Special Education vouchers which are part of a educational program in Florida and Ohio.
Please contact me with your pros or cons regarding the above listed information.
I have two children that are learning disabled thus in Special Education in Alaska.
Last year I pulled my children out of public school as my oldest was suffering daily from bullying and harrassment.
Now I advocate for School Choice. I feel that the monies spent in my son's due process proceeding could have been utilized to further his education, bring him back up to speed and he could have been in a different school. Instead the monies were utilized to pay a Hearing Officer, the District had an Attorney (who does not work for peanuts either) they had to rent space in a church and paid for the transcripts. Not to mention all the hours my husband and I spent on research, time off from work to attend the hearing etc. I feel that if the option was there instead of feeding the bureaucracy our current educational system has created, the child could be focused on, thus spending the money on him.
one of the schools that aren't really urban (like Anchorage or
Fairbanks) but not bush either. Just a small town.
