Positions For Male Social Studies Teachers In Alaska

I am wondering what the potential is for male social studies teachers in Alaska. I am back in school and anticipate graduating in 2010. I am currently enrolled in the UW system here in Wisconsin and am trying to line up information on places that I would consider teaching. I am 42 and a family man but really am considering Alaska as a possibility. Does anyone have any information I can use in making a determination? Thanks very much.

I guess I have never given the "child molester" angle any thought. As a parent, nothing could be further from my mind other than to wonder how anyone could be capable of doing such horrible things to a child. But, as a social studies student and soon to be teacher, the depravity and the capacity for human beings to inflict pain and suffering on eachother never ceases to amaze me. That's not male or female dominated, it's part of the human condition. Fortunately, most of us have the intelligence and the capacity to understand right from wrong and never cross over the lines that those who engage in such attrocities have no such compunction about doing. It's not that I don't appreciate your point of view, I do, but could you give me some specifics on your background and why you feel the way you do regarding this issue? I know that here in Wisconsin, women are not the rule as principals although there are some here and there and yet I don't hear any women crying sexism because of it. I cannot believe in this day and age that anyone would participate in anything so blatant as to not hire qualified teachers willing to relocate and teach based on nothing more than their sex and a what if scenario. Additionally, I think that one of the many reasons for more women in the teaching profession and in district management is that these are positions in which women have always held a dominating position so there is nothing really new there so much. Then too is the fact that women at our colleges and universities often outnumber men who prefer to attend technical colleges and obtain jobs and positions more often associated with males and greater earnings potential such as technicians, skilled electricians, carpenters, etc. I don't think that many men consider jobs as teachers anymore because it is seen as predominantly a female centered endeavor. Women have always been seen as nuturers and caregivers which makes them obvious choices to administrate education to young children. But roles are shifting and men can be nuturing too, just in a different way than women but in a no less diminished role. Men have traditionally been seen as disciplinarians and the ones who provide rigid structure which is why they have been perceived as not being suited to teaching. This too is incorrect and time as well as society is adjusting that view. Thanks for the reply and the point of view. I have duly noted it. have your cake and eat it, too? So you want to benefit from the perception that men are better at controlling a classroom and that men make better authority figures but you do not want to suffer from the perception that men who choose to work around children are far more often child molesters than are women who choose to work around children. LOL
