Hey Guys,

My friend and I are starting to scope out teacher positions for the 2009-10 school year. We are not new to Alaska and are considering the top of the world.

I am a science/math teacher 7-12 and she is a K-12 generalist. Has anyone heard of a school up there where a couple of positions will be opening?

Curious in the SE Cool, we are looking for a small village. We've done a mid-sized village and we've done a larger village. We are really looking for one of those villages that have 3-4 teachers. We are both intrigued by the North Slope and are very adventuresome.

alaska teacher North Slope only has one school close to that small. Couple of others that are double that size. Yes the ocean freezes over and they do take snow machines on it while hunting. alaska teacher Thank the hunting situation depends on the individual and the situation. Knew a teacher that was having success while locals were not, teacher was asked to leave town. Things like how your relationship with locals is also impacts hunting situation. Some folks open to females hunting, others not so much, very variable.

I believe the teacher that was kicked out ...was kicked out because not only did he hunt as soon as he got off the plane...but He also cut down trees from a locals land...then built a cabin on another locals land...without permission. I think he was under the impression that the land surrounding the village was "free". He is a really decent man, but I would have suggested to him that he make connections with the community and socilaise a bit before being so brazen. It's odd how so much is misunderstood because they fail to ask around.....a shame really.

If you are a hunter then it would be a wonderful tool to use to connect with local people. It is something the kids can relate to. The best way to indtroduce yourself to the hunting community is to ask to go along on a hunt. Hunting revolves around the time of the year, and varies village by village. Ask what they are hunting in that time of the year. This gives you a chance to get a feel for the local rythym. Be aware that it will take some time. Me and my other half (both of us are hunters) take teachers with us often enough..along with other non-locals. Have your hunting liscenses in line and you will totally enjoy it!
