Even stable districts can have individual schools and villages that are dysfunctional. Some northerly districts with good reputations and long-serving superintendants are Aleutian West (doesn't post on ATP), Bering Strait, Pribilofs. Do your homework. Search sex offender databases, talk to the Alaska state troopers, ask to speak to teachers in the district, find out how many teachers are returning (beware of districts with 80-100% turnover), ask if the super/principals are returning and how long they've been there, find out teacher housing conditions, verify that you wont be forced to accept a roomate halfway through the year if that sort of unpredictability bothers you. Go to the Teacher Fair, Captain Cook hotel in Anchorage, 3rd weekend of every April. Ask about the students you will teach.
