It has now passed the deadline for resignations in our school system (Russell County). I have decided that I would like to stay home with our kids, and I want to submit my resignation now instead of waiting until next summer. My main concern is my retirement account with the system.
If I break my contract, can they (Russell County Schools) keep all or part of my retirement account as a penalty for my breaking it? I know if I opt to have the retirement returned to me (which is what I'd prefer) then Uncle Sam will take his share...but I just want to make sure of whether or not they can use the breaking of my contract to keep the rest of my retirement.
I have been with the school system for eight years. I have tenure, but I am not yet vested. Don't know if that will affect the out come or your answers.

Even though you may not have signed a contract, unless you have been terminated or you resign by the last school day you are deemed under contract for the next school year. This is a law which has been mentioned in the AEA Journal several times. You have to turn in yur regisnation to the school system at least 45 days preceding the opening day of the next school year. Failure to do so can result in the loss of your teaching certificate. Some school systems will allow you to resign but they don't have to. AEA will not back you in trying to break this law. I would advise you to immediately speak with your principal or superintendent to see if they would allow it. I have known people to be allowed out of their contract within a few days of school starting but it is getting harder for that to happen since we are starting to have a teacher shortage. I do not believe they could keep you your retirement funds as punishment. Let me also advise you to reconsider withdrawing your retirement funds unless you absolutely must have the money. I did the same thing earlier in my career. Now even though I have the years to retire, I am still working. The amount to repay grows tremendously. For me it is close to $40,000. Those days will be here before you know it.
I am considered a 'highly qualified' teacher with 30 years experience, Reading Recovery certification, GT certification,ESL certified, Instructional facilitator at my campus and I am certified in Texas and Louisiana. I am wanting to know will I still have to take a test to teach in public and or private schools???when I move to Mobile, Alabama. Thanks for your help.
I have made several posts....and am hoping to learn about the Mobile county schools before we move there. I have taught in 2 other states La. and Tx. I want to continue teaching even though I have taught for 30 years I am only 53 and not nearly ready to stay home. :>)I will have the option of teaching in a private school. Can you help??Do I have to have an Al. certificate or will I be okay as a teacher certified in 2 other states???
Mobile schools are mostly inner city, but lots of options, Daphne City, Fairhope schools, Spanish Fort schools...and yes you do have to apply for and receive an AL teaching cert. Pam

Does anyone know how long it takes to get a certificate from the Alabama DOE after all test scores, etc. are in? I received my APTTP scores on Friday. According to the letter, the scores have been reported to the DOE, but my contact at the DOE says they have not received them. This has been the most frustrating job search I have ever experienced!!!
The area I am in (Autauga/Elmore/Montgomery) is desperate for math teachers. I was one of 3 people that applied for my job (as opposed to an excess of 300 for about 20 elementary positions in Autauga. The Principal decided to interview all three applicants, and we just really saw eye to eye on a several things. Where are you in AL? Private school could be a great option. Jessica

The Personnel Office of each system can view the process of a certificate online. If all your information/documents are there and the certificate is "in process" you can be hired and they can expedite the process. Universities in our area issue a card or letter that will allow us to hire before the certificate is actually received.
The previous poster is correct that this is done with hard to fill positions most often and rarely for elementary positions.
I have been waiting way too long to receive my certification from the state, and money is running out! What other jobs are elementary teachers with a masters degree qualified for? I need something that pays well as I have bills that are used to being paid with a teacher's salary.....any ideas out there?
Today I stopped in at the DeKalb County office to drop off some additional items for my application. I asked the girl at the front desk to check and make sure they had it on file. I have called before and been told that they have it. She checked and then told me that she didn't find it, and said, "it has probably been pulled." She then said they have new applications and asked if I wanted to fill one out. I asked if it was really necessary to fill out another one (unless they have lost the first one). She said, "well, they are looking at THESE applications now." She also said they don't keep the applications on file very long. I asked if they keep them at least a year. She said they did. I told her I had filled mine out at the end of June, so surely they had not discarded it. I then took the new application and walked out the door. When I think that I gave up a job I absolutely loved, to move here, I want to cry. I taught in Florida for 15.5 years and was highly qualified. I never imagined what a nightmare I would walk into here. I went to sub training for Ft. Payne City Schools and met at least 3 or 4 people who are in the same situation.
Dekalb County, Georgia???? Are you crazy! You need to read the Ga board! Dekalb is a hell hole. The work load is enormous and they teachers are treated terribly to say the least.

We are talking about Dekalb County, Alabama. Yes I agree with you about Dekalb County Ga. Dekalb, Alabama is a very sought after county with no jobs. > > > On 7/31/07, Lynda Rutenkroger wrote: >> To be honest, I can't afford to sub either. My husband is on >> disability. I will be moving to Alabama in January, 2008. Is it typical or very unusual for teaching positions to open mid- year? I will be moving to northern AL.-I could teach in any county in the northeastern part of the state. I have a Masters degree in early childhood ed. and over 25 years experience.
Other links on the alsde page will tell you what is needed for certification. It does take a long time and you'l be surprised at how difficult it can be to achieve Highly Qualified status.
Thank you for posting here. I actually am in North Alabama, and I have had a lot of trouble getting my license. Now I am trying to prove the certification of a school I taught at for the last 6 years, and because I took the Praxis 1 as part of my teacher education program instead of for my actual orig. certificate, it looks like I will have to take the Alabama test too. I don't understand this because I took it earlier than Alabama is requiring, and I had to have it to get my initial certificate. Why did the State of Alabama have my papers in hand for months before telling me this. So now, I have no job, I have a house to pay for, and I don't know what to do next. Any suggestions? Please hurry, my mortgage is late already!
