I FINALLY received my certificate in the mail yesterday. Now I'm wondering when the HQT letter will arrive. A contact at the DOE was under the impression that the letters went out at the same time as the certificates. Does anyone have any knowledge of this?
I began the certification process back in March when we knew we were moving to Alabama. I received my certificate on August 6th and the HQ Letter on August 7th.

My HQ letter was sent to a random address. The people that received it were kind enough to forward to me. After receiving my certificate I waited almost a month for my HQ letter. They do have an online system that school districts can access and check to see if you are highly qualified. I found this out of course, AFTER I waisted a month looking for it.
I am interested in finding out some specific information about this former superintendent. I have read the news accounts but am interested in specific documents that might be available online. If anyone has any links to any documents it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

What can a certified teacher charge for tutoring students privately after school? My school (a private school) says that it is perfectly fine and that the details will need to be worked out with the parents. I am wondering what to charge. What is the going rate?
I charge $30 an hour or $50 if they prefer 2 sessions per week. I also will tutor 2 students at a time at a reduced rate ($20 each). When I do this, the students need to be about the same level. You can have a lot of fun with tutoring 2 at a time.
My husband got a promotion that will take us to Dothan, AL. I have been trying to find out what is necessary to get certified in Alabama, and all I have been getting is the run around!
Is there really a teacher shortage or not? I hold a B.S. in Computer Science with a minor in vocal music. I have been enrolled in a Master of Arts in Teaching program at a local college; but, because of the move I can't complete the ONE class I lack to receive a full 5-year license!
A recruiter told me that I would be able to get certified without a problem; however, the certification office has told me that I can either start my Master's program over or get hired by a district before I can get certified. Who will hire me without AL certification? I also asked if they would accept any online programs such as Western Governors University. They said they do accept some programs, but couldn't tell me which ones! How then, am I supposed to know which to enroll in?
I know nothing about Dothan, but this non-certification process already has me dreading moving to Alabama.

Hi, I know it is reallllyyyy frustrating to get certified in Alabama. Have you looked into Troy State Univesity? They have campuses all over as well as in Dothan and they also offer online and tapes via tape. Worth a try! Good luck! :)
Good luck to you. I was in the same position. My husband was transferred to Gadsden. I have 16 years of VERY successful teaching experience. After teaching for 8 years in elem and being highly qualified in elem in 2 diff states, AL does not recognize my HQ status because I didn't take the Praxis test that they require. I am, however, HQ in middle scool. There were 2 job openings within 30 minutes to where I live. It takes forever to get your certificate and you MUST take the ATPPT test regardless of how long you've been teaching or your HQ status. This was a complete joke! This is the same test that they give to college students just entering the educ field. A test similar to the one I took in OK 20 years ago! They will not consider you for a certificate until you've passed this test. The test itself is also a joke! Reading, writing and Math. I have given up on the job search and am now in the process fulfilling my goal of becoming a fulltime consultant and presentor at conferences and schools. I hope you have better luck than I did!
I will be graduating from an NCATE accredited university in NY in the spring, and I plan on moving down to teach in Alabama after that. I know that NY certification recipricates to Alabama, but I'm REALLY confused as to whether or not I'll need to take more tests. I already need to take 4 to get certified in NY. Does anyone know how this works? I've emailed a bunch of people in the state ed department, but they just email me a bunch of confusing links that don't answer my question.
Sounds like you've started early, which is great! You need to go ahead with the entire process. Go ahead and ask for the packet from the State Department. You can go ahead and proceed with some parts like the criminal background search. (You will have to have this even if you do one in NY) Check with the state department to see if you will have to take the ATPPT test. You may not since you are just graduating. Did you have to take the Praxis I? I would just recommend to get started right now. The AL certification is the longest I've ever encountered. I move every 2-4 years and have taught for 16 years, so I've had a lot of experience with this process. AL has been the toughest and most frustrating. This is the first year that I did not get a job! If you know which district you will be living, go ahead and try to get your foot in the door. I found that the area where I moved (small town) does not accept outsiders very well! Good luck! Hi all, Iam a foreign graduate and recently got my transcripts evaluated by WES. According to the evaluation i hold a bachelors degree in business administration and English literature. Im seeking middle/elementary teaching certificat in AL. I ve send my application for 2mnths now but haven't heard anything from DOE. One of the representative told me that it takes 3/4 mnths before someone even looks at the application. This is very frustrating coz all i need to know is what am i required to do to get certification. I would really appreciate if someone could guide me in this regard so that i atleast start preparing without wasting any more time.
I found that the best and fastest means of communication was through phone calls. You will have someone assigned to you. Find out who that is, get their extension number and call.

I would advise you to go through the State Department of Education in Montgomery, AL and definitely do this with a phone call. I have had no trouble getting the information I needed to find out what was required of me. Ask the person who helps you if you can use them as a contact person.
