My time in the DROP ends next Dec of 2008. However, I am considering ending my time in May, 2008. I am really ready to go. I teach in junior high and am burned out plus my mom who is 92 is not well. How much money would I lose if I choose to go out a semester early?
Found a fantastic new chapter-book series for ages 7-9 that the kids in my class are thrilled about. It's called the Incredible Journey Books and it has fast-paced worldly adventures filled with geography facts. The plots are interesting and the series has done the trick to get my third-grade class interested in exploring the world map. The books have a great site that has an Africa unit along with puzzles to go with each book. Go to [link removed].
I was thinking about going back to college for elementary education but after reading some comments I'm not too sure. I,ve been in the health care field for about 10 years and I'm ready to get out. Is it true about no funding to pay teachers in mobile, al.? Any pros or cons to this would be greatly appreciated.

I agree...your going to spend all your time doing paperwork and teaching to a test. You'll go home everyday wishing you had time to teach. However...if it's where your heart is leading you, choose another field. Elementary is the worst way to go. There aren't any jobs for Elementary folks.

Hey everyone, I'm a current college student majoring in secondary education social science. I am from Alabama and would like to stay in state after I graduate, but I continue to hear negative things about differnt school boards across the state. Can anyone please give me any advice about how it is when you are looking for a school systerm and becoming certified. Thanks in advance.
Hey there. I was suggested to look into temporary subbing by going to Barton and going through the whole process and sign up for temporary subbing. I'm wondering how the jobs there look, if anyone has any knowledge. I'm in college right now, so my schedule during the day is a little strange. I'm wondering if, and how often if so, there are half-days or the like. I can't really go in the mornings for a few of the weekdays, so I wonder if there are opportunities for afternoon subbing. Thanks for any reply!

All of AL is in the same time zone, regardless of how far you drive...

We do not have enough teacher to make it work. One teacher goes to three different classrooms per period in junior high school
I teach ELL in a school that has 455 ELL students out off 900 students here in Alabama. Should an ELL teacher pull more than 6-7 kindergarten in a 30 minute period? Does anyone think that 10 non english speaking kindergarteners is too many if you are trying to focus on each one?
I have an English minor with a 3.8/4.0 undergrad, a law degree, and am interested in a change of careers and alternative teaching. I taught Business and Technical Writing at the University of Illinois for two years while attending law school there. I am willing to relocate to do so, and am looking for a great opportunity. Any suggestions about the best place to start would be appreciated.
