I have taught for 31 years and I am certified in Louisiana and Texas. I will retire from Texas, but want to continue in my field after we move to the Mobile area. I am a highly qualified teacher: GT certified, ESL certified, Life time cert. for K-8 in Louisiana.I am Reading Recovery trained and presently teaching RR and I am also an Instructional Facilitator at my school for pk-1 grades. I am serving as a mentor for new kindergarten teachers. I am still very energetic and love going to work each day.How difficult will it be to find a position in this area?? Thanks for your responses in advance.
What happened at the board meeting on 5/5?? Can you name some private schools in the area ? Ones where you would teach? Not a catholic school. Laurie

I teach in Baldwin County. I love teaching here. Baldwin does have its funding problems, due to tax abatement requests. My advice is to go to [link removed]

The process of becoming a sub is really tedious, though. I'm almost finished with my degree in Secondary Education, and I haven't gotten my sub's license yet. I wish they would simplify the process so that more college students could get their sub's licenses. The way it is currently, you would need to be taking night classes or something so that you could go and fill out all of the paper work and attend the training seminars, so I guess that means more people who aren't planning to go into teaching as a profession can become subs in this state, while the poor college students remain disadvantaged, especially if you take daytime classes. I'm really kind of upset about this practice, because I'm genuinely interested in teaching, and subbing would have been a great way to experience the classroom before student teaching, but, alas, at this rate, I'm going to need to graduate and then apply for my sub's license.

I am certified in Louisiana and Texas. I am moving to Alabama and did not want to have to take another state test at this point in my career. Would I have to have Alabama certification to teach in their private schools?
I have taught for over 30 years and am considered highly qualified. I am also a Reading Recovery teacher and an instructional specialist for Kindergarten and first grade.I just was trying to avoid taking another state test at this point. No, I didn't take the PRAXIS and don't really want to, but I do love my job and would like to continue working in the schools. NO subbing, though! :>) Laurie
I know how you feel. My husband is military and we move to a new state every 2-4 years, and a new state always means a new test. We are actually moving again this summer, and I am so burned out on all of the things I have to do to be able to teach, I have decided not to teach next year. I think I am going to work on my master's and do something else until he retires in 4 years.
Unfortunately it doesn't matter how qualified you really are, you won't be considered "highly qualified" in AL without the Praxis. However, with your experience you won't have any trouble finding a private school job.
