Hi...Looking for a Birmingham teacher who is a Taylor Hicks fan with students that are also fans. I'm affliated with some fan sites that want to do a charity donation for a class in the music area. We're thinking of maybe adopting a class and trying to help sponsor some musical opportunities for the kids, maybe get some instruments donated, create a memory book for Taylor as part of the project etc. I'd love to hear from you!
I posted your discussion question on the Teachers Connect discussion board. I hope someone one will give you some pros and cons of teaching.

I love teaching and have for 27 years. But, it is not a job that you leave at 3:00. You really don't have summers off either and the extra time you put in and have to put in are volunteer. As your children get older you may need to find additional jobs for money. College is tough to pay for on two salaries comparable to a teacher's salary. I have a master's degree!
I'm trying to take the time I have during spring break to muddle through my structured interview questions, but I have to say I am at a loss! These questions are SO broad, I just don't know where to begin and how much to say on them. This makes me wish I had chosen the oral interview instead of written...ARGH!
Can anyone offer suggestions/advice on these? How much information did you give per answer, and did you organize it by the given statements or let your answer flow and address the statements throughout? Any tips would be appreciated!
PEPE is Alabama's evaluation program for educators - Professional Education Personnel Evaluation. There are 3 parts (I believe - somebody correct me if I'm wrong): observations by administration (3), the structured interview, and the professional development plan (PDP).
The structured interview can be oral or written and answers three question sets. As I understand it from colleagues, most teachers elect the written interview so they have time to plan out and compose their answers. Personally, I think I would've had a really hard time meeting all the different indicators if I had to do it in an on-the-spot oral interview.
You can find out more about PEPE at [link removed]!

This semester I am in a reading stratagies class and have been asked by my professor to correspond with a teacher outside of South Carolina to discuss how other teachers in other states approach reading. I think I posted earlier in the wrong place sorry!! Hello, I am a 33 yr. old mother of 5 yr old twin boys. I am considering returning to school to pursue an elementary teaching position. I would like to hear some pros & and maybe some cons of teaching. I love children & I feel like if I can survive 5 yrs with my boys I can survive any thing. Also, the change in my schedule would allow me to be home when the kids are home. So what do you guys think? Do you love your jobs or hate them? thanks! christie!
Oh Christie, This is not a good time to enter education. We are in crisis mode in many school systems. If you can find a system to work in that still values teachers and allows them the time to teach , go for it. But I don't know if that exsists. I just finished working on paperwork, and worked two hours. I am not finished, and that is just one day. I am so discouraged.

Wow! As a teacher with only a couple of years under my belt, i don't know if i am as qualified to speak on this, but I will try. It is so rewarding, yet so time consuming. The overwhelming feeling you can get is such a burden at times because you know you are just busting your butt to tread water. I think Sandy is so right when she posts about school districts valuing their teachers and allowing them to teach; that is the best possible outcome for people to develop teaching skills. So many districts are just being overwhelmed with testing and procedures that it is a frustration factor that makes both new and old teachers walk away. If you aren't in it for anything except it is what you enjoy, try it. The worst thing that can happen if it doesn't work out is that you can find a new job that pays more, has better hours and less accountability. I love to teach when i get the chance, and i am going to stay in it. Good luck!

My family and I are looking for a nice home base hotel...not too fancy, just clean and not too far away from the Exploreum, the forts, USS Alabama, etc.
Does anyone know if the Wingate Inn is nice? It has good reviews.
Anything terrific that my children will love to do? They are 12 (son) 9 (daughter)
How about going to a beach...suggestions? Restaurants? What about safety.... are we safe in that part of town? Is there a part we DON"T want to be in??
Thanks you guys! I know teachers are truly friends no matter where we are!
Bo are you familiar with the Wingate on Springhill Plaza Ct, ...that's the address of the hotel...can you tell me if we are in a safe area there?
Thanks, Lorri

Sorry, have not been to the Springhill area in awhile. Used to be an area built up around the Srpinghill mall out of town a bit, now town has followed the mall out there. If you like good seafood try the Oyster Shack on the Causeway. It is kid friendly. Go to the beach on the eastern shore across the causeway. [link removed]

frustratedI'm sorry Margaret but Huntsville City Schools have not made their pay schedule public. From what I understand, you wouldn't be able to make heads or tails from it even if it was.
Well Joe, I don't know. A guess would be a shortage of SPE teachers on all levels due to NCLB changes, displeasure with the "job description" of reading coach state wide, and shortage of secondary teachers particularly in math and science state wide. Also we are a university town and have a high turn over as professor and coaches wives teach in our system, husbands are transfered or leave and we lose the wives as teachers. Also we compete with a very popular "county" system for employees here in our area. Bo
