My husband and I are moving to Opelika from Ga. What is the pay like for a first grade teacher with a masters in Reading in Alabama. I have taught for 5 years.
There are many school systems in the Opelika area. Auburn City Schools has an excellent reputation. Also within driving distance is Chambers County, Troup County Georgia, Randolph county, Lee county, etc.. You will probably find a system that you like. Bo

I will be visiting Birmingham, Alabama this summer. Can you tell me what attractions I should see there? Can you give me names of places to eat at? I will be staying for 2 weeks. Thanks
What part of Birmingham are you staying? Many good places to eat. Will you have children with you?? If yes, the Birmingham zoo would be a nice place to visit. If you love gardens, the botanical garden is across from the zoo. If you like flea markets, visit Tannehill State Park on trade day, usually a Sat. It is just according to what part of town you are staying and your interests.

I am currently teaching in Michigan...but we are moving back to BAMA this summer. Even though I am highly qualified here-- they will not accept my testing scores from Michigan...and are requiring me to take the Praxis II.
I am special ed certified and Graduated from Athens State in 2001...I have been teaching here ever since. ( They will not count that experience either!)
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I tell ya...I am just about at my limit with the people at the board of ed...they are always so rude and short with me.
Thank you!!! Thank you!!! Thank you for any advice you can give.
Why are they not accepting your teaching experience? Did you fill out the EXP form? So far, I have not heard a word from the State....to even allow me to go take the test. I have been teaching since 1999 in MI and then FL. I hope they accept my experience. I am afraid now.

I moved back to Alabama last year from Tennessee. I've taught in Tennessee for 15 years and received my Bachelors degree from a University in Alabama. I also received a Masters degree from a University in Alabama. The state of Alabama made me take the Praxis exam AND a basic skills exam. (ATTP ??) Do NOT worry about the basic skills exam. It is like 2 + 2! (no lie) You can get study materials online. Just google Praxis exam and you will find the sites that will help you. Good luck! (by the way, they did not except my experience either)

I wonder if Mobile, AL accepts experience and 2 other state certifications??? I will have 30 years when I leave Texas.I am also life time certified in Louisiana. Do you know if private schools also have to be Alabama certified???

The public schools are not going to hire you without AL certification.
Private schools do not have to require that their high school teachers be certified. Elementary teachers must have Alabama certification and high school teachers must have 24 credit hours in the subject in which they are teaching. These are SACS requirements. If you choose to work in a private school that is not SACS accredited, then the school will have its own policy. However, you do not want to work in a private school that is not AISA (AL Independent Schools Association) and SACS accredited unless you do not plan on making any additional career moves.
***Note***If you spend two years in a SACS accredited school (private or public) and pass the Praxis II, you will be eligible to receive an Alabama certification in that subject area and you will be considered highly qualified. Good luck!
I am currently attending school in Mississippi but will be returning to Alabama after I graduate. I am in elementary education. In Mississippi you have two concentrations. Mine are english, and history. In Mississippi if you take 18 hours in these subjects your certified to teach elementary, if you take 21 then your certified to teach k- 12. I have been asking everywhere if anyone knows how many hours are required in Alabama to be able to do this, and no one seems to have answers. If any of you know I would grately appreciate it. Thanks
All of the information regarding certification is on the ALSDE website. It is actually pretty easy to navigate. I do know that the state of Alabama will certify you in the field of Elementary Education if you received your degree in Elementary Education via an approved program. However, AL does not do the so many credit hours in one subject deal (this is due to no child left behind). The only way to add on a subject (this would be something other than what your degree is in)would be to teach in Mississippi using your Mississippi certificate (the Mississippi certificate has to be in the area you are teaching) for three years (teaching the subject you want to be certified in) or you have to teach for two years with passing Praxis II scores. You can also work at an Alabama private school (must have accreditation by SACS) for two years and pass the Praxis II if you want a certification in an area in a subject other than the one in which you earned your degree. Your last option is to get your Master's in the subject in which you want to teach. However, BE VERY CAREFUL with on-line degrees. There are many areas in which you can receive a degree, but Alabama will not recognize it. Make sure you get approval before starting a Master's program.
I hope this information is clear and helpful. Your best bet is to get the Elem Ed Certification through the state of MS and then use that certification to get an Elem Ed certificate in AL. But keep in mind, the hurdle at that point would be to actually find an Elem. Ed position in the state of AL.
If you go the teaching in a private school route, SACS requires that you have 24 credit hours in the subject you are teaching.
Unfortunately, Mississippi is the easiest state in which to receive a certification, making in harder to apply in another state.

I am sure that you will have to take the ATTP and the Praxis but if you have already taken them you dont have to do them again. I just got certified and didnt have to do this. Some people may have to do different things maybe it was because I am already and Alabama native.

I have recently switched my major from elementary ed. to Hs History. I am begginning to thind that this is a huge mistake! Everyone is telling me,that I will not be able to find a job in History. I am really afraid I have made a mistake. Does anyone know if the coaches are the ones who really get the jobs in History?
My sister has a degree in History. She was never able to get a job. She had excellent grades and only glowing recommendations. Change your major.

There are many school systems in the Opelika area. Auburn City

distance is Chambers County, Troup County Georgia, Randolph
county, Lee county, etc.. You will probably find a system that
you like. Bo
