Relocation from Louisiana

My husbands job is requiring us to relocate to the Mobile area. I am currently teaching preschool at a private school and have been doing so for nearly 14 years. I did some research and noticed public schools in Alabama start at Kindergarten. There is also not as many private schools there. We noticed that across the street from where we are looking to buy a house, there is a public school. Do you think there is any chance of them hiring me? If not for teacher, what about assistant position? Since we will not have any family, nor friends in the state to help us out, would they take that into consideration and also the fact that we will be living exactly across the street from the school? I heard that the school system there is strict and they place you/you can't choose where you want to be employed. Is this true? Can anyone give me some helpful information to assist me in continuing what I love to do... I am looking forward to the move in the upcoming weeks, but not the job hunting pro...See More

Your first hurdle in securing a teaching job in Alabama is obtaining an Alabama teaching certificate. Unless you are Nationally Board Certified, your certificate from Lousiana is not valid in Alabama. Your first hurdle in securing a teaching job in Alabama is obtaining an Alabama teaching certificate. Unless you are Nationally Board Certified, your certificate from Lousiana is not valid in Alabama. There is paperwork involved and you may have to take some additional college classes to meet certification requirements. This can be a VERY slow process. I suggest that you contact the Alabama State Baord of Education immediately to find out what you need to do to be certified.

Paraprofessional positions (what you called teacher's assistants) are very coveted and in my system are almost harder to come by than a teacher's position. In my system, they are usually given to dedicated substitutes.

Alabama is, unfortunately, in proration our budgets have been cut 25% for the last two months. I forsee this getting worse before it gets better.

Mobile is the largest school system in the state and asking for a particular school might do you more harm than good in seeking a position. I don't think it will matter to them at all that you live across the street. Your best best is to secure a position and HOPE for a transfer to the school of your choice in the future (like after you get tenure).

Contrary to what you think, there are MANY private schools in Mobile. There are quite a few parochial schools, especially catholic.
