I was offered a Paraprofessional job approximately two weeks ago. A day or two ago, I called HR and asked if they needed anything from me before I could start. They said no. I called the school and spoke with two different Asst. Principals and asked them what else needed to happen before I could start. They both said they had to hear from HR first on what to do. HR said it was up to the school as to when I would or could start.
The impression I'm getting is that this para position is just not very important to the school or else they could call or e-mail with a specific set start date since I'm already in the system. Could it really take several weeks or months before starting? Is it that this position (as one teacher told me) is just not a top priority to the administration and they're more concerned with daily activities and CSAP scores than hiring another para right now - so they'll get around to it when they feel it's important or when they have nothing else of concern.
What do you guys think? My attitude at this point is to check back once or twice per week, and just get on with my life. If I don't hear anything definitive within another week or two, just forget I was every offered the job and keep moving forward.

As NEH Summer Scholars at the “American History through the Eyes of a California Family” workshop, you will use the artifacts and archival sources of both the Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum and CSU Dominguez Hills Special Collections to trace the Dominguez family history for over two centuries. Their history and lands are entwined with California 's rich Indian, Spanish, Mexican and American history.
NEH workshops feature well known scholars, hands-on work with artifacts and archival documents, workshops and experiential learning opportunities that will bring history to life, and field trips to deepen historical and cultural connections. Workshops address the Dominguez family business and inheritance strategies and their relationship to natives and migrants from varied social and cultural backgrounds. Successful applicants whose title will become NEH Summer Scholars will also analyze how territorial industrial expansion transformed the American people and how massive immigration after 1870, including the Chinese, some of whom became laborers on Dominguez lands, formed new social patterns and concepts about national identity.
$1200 stipends are offered to help cover travel, lodging, and meal expenses.
Workshops will be offered twice and applicants may apply to one, but not both, workshops. The first is the week of June 13-17, 2011 and the second is the week of June 20-24, 2011. Continuing Education Units offered. Applications due March 1st.
I am a parent of a child taking the CSAP for the first time. How many questions does my child need to get right to be proficient? I know I want my child to do the best he can but I was just curious?

I have a BA in English, with an emphasis in writing. I have over 15 years' experience working as a journalist, marketing copywriter, editor, and proofreader. I have about 10 years' experience in education, having headed adult GED programs, taught middle-school Language Arts previously, substituted, and working as a para as well. I've also taught English and Journalism at the college level.
Are there any support or networking groups for Language Arts/Humanities/English/ESL/ELA teachers anywhere in Colorado? I have not been able to find anything concrete on the CDE or DPS websites. There are "information sessions" listed on the DPS calendar but they have no set dates, times, or locations and e-mails asking for this information have not been returned. Such groups would seem reasonable to want, but I have not been able to find any traces of them. Can anyone help with direct information?
Question two:
How do Language Arts instructors, or those wishing to teach Language Arts and believe in the value of knowing how to read and write intelligently and accurately find positions? It seems that the procedure is to apply online and then one day perhaps hear something back. There do not seem to be recruiting events for Language Arts instructors and I keep hearing that there is no need for such instructors and with such deep financial cuts not to expect any job offers at all==but we also know that there is a very high turnover rate for inexperienced teachers and hiring takes place all the time within inner circles. How does one break through without personal connections?
