Gang violence is rising. School buildings are crumbling. An embezzlement scandal plagues the teachers' union. The superintendent abruptly quit. And with a budget deficit of about $21 million, school officials said this month they would cut 771 jobs -- 545 of them teaching positions.
G.W. the appointed President was in a classroom today....too bad one of those kids didn't spit on him and say, " Gee President Bush, I was showing you respect"

Hi, I live in Boston and am finishing up my masters in school counseling. I am planning to move to D.C this summer and would like to know of any positions in public schools for the fall of 2004. If anyone knows of any, could you please reply to this email? Thanks so much.

I am also fully certified as a guidance counselor in Boston and have had difficulty in finding employment in this area.
Hi. My name is Felicia and I've been singing for about a year, but my instructor lives too far and I need someone who is qualified closer to alexandria area. a response would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I am a Spanish bilingual teacher that is fully certified in elementary, middle school and now I have applied to provisional certification in ESL/ Special education Highschool teaching. Currently, the new English immersion law and budget cuts has displaced thousands of teachers in the state of Massachusetts. I would be interested in knowing more about employment opportunities in your state. It would be helpful to know more about school working conditions, support for world languages and global education, and certification process for out-of state employees. I would be interested in knowing more about your experiences and views in the area of bilingual education and its future around the country.
I would be interested in knowing what services you have for children whose native language is not English. How do you help students who seem to master well their own language, but yet perform poorly on intelligence and reading tests. What do you do if you find our through the parent, that the child cannot read or write in their own language?... what if you suspect that your student has a learning disability?
I have a student in my classroom that refuses to stand during the pledge of allegiance. My principal told me that the superintendent sent a note directed to all teachers that all students must stand in respect for the flag. She told me that I should provide a list of students who do not want to stand or say the pledge. She will call the parents of these children. The student claims that his parents have talked to him about the first amendment of freedom of speech of the U.S. constitution. Now there are other students that refuse to stand. They say that they can be patriotic and still exercise their freedom of speech. Now, I feel confused...are these parents hippies that are giving me a hard time?
The student and his parents are correct. The Supreme Court declared in 1943 in a case called West Virginia v. Barnette that a student cannot be forced to stand and recite the Pledge of Allegiance. The First Amendment protects not only the freedom of speech but the freedom not to speak. A student may opt out of the ceremony.
If the Superintendent has actually issued such a directive, it would be subject to a serious legal challenge. This sort of directive may be trying to draw a fine line between standing in respect for the flag and actually reciting the pledge, but that doesn't really pass the laugh test -- it's clear what the ceremony is for, and our schools are not for state indoctrination.
You should not provide a McCarthy-type list as the principal has requested. You should contact the School Board immediately at 202-442-4289 about this issue.
