Hi all, My husband and I are teachers from Berlin, CT. Rob recently authored his first book and several school districts across the country are using it with their kids. It's titled, A Winner by Any Standard: A Personal Growth Journey for Every American Teen and it promotes all the ideals upon which future success is built—e.g., optimism, gratitude, self-belief, a strong work ethic, a sense of wonder, humility, originality. Any word of mouth you can spread would be greatly appreciated as #1, it can empower young people and counteract popular culture and #2, the literary world isn't set up to accept/assist a schoolteacher with no national platform from which to promote. You may want to check out supplemental service providers like Wellness, Inc. who offer after school programs and tutoring.

I currently live and teach in Chicago and will be moving to the D.C. area in the Fall. Where can I find information on teaching in the D.C. schools and neighboring areas? I am really looking to find out certification information as well as career searching. Your help is grately appreciated.
Teaching in the District of Columbia was a great experience. I am a product of urban education and I salute the teachers who educate effectively in this environment. The job of an urban teacher is very stressful especially when the system doesn't support you. The DCPS teacher needs support, training, and continued encouragement. The DCPS teacher is very similiar to the DCPS student. Mold a great teacher and you mold a great student. The lessons that I have learned both a urban student and teacher have been painful. However, but the pains I have to turn to joy and reward. I truly understand the thought behind not wanting to WORK in this environment. An environment of stress, gossip, and pure mismanagement. GREAT business started out like this -- (My opinion)- I challenge those to take a 2nd look at teaching in an urban environment. You will find many rewards in teaching in such environments. The DCPS school is challenging. I like to call it -- the cake that hasn't been fully baked yet!
Mold a great teacher and you will produce GREAT students. Teachers need to know that their students can achieve!

I worked for them last fall. They are a very good organization to work with. The kids are great and the folks who support the program give a lot of artistic license. I highly recommend it.

Taking a legal and law issues class. I would like to put out questions that I need answers pertaining to DC School system. I would appreciate any input. Question You are the SUperintendent of Schools. The secretary is out and you answer the telephone. A parent asks if she can enroll her child in kindergarten at the start of the 2003-04 school year. The child was born on November 19, 1997. What is your answer? What is your authority? Please keep in mind answers must pertain to DC School system policies and procedures. Question - Do DCPS have a Code of Ethnics for Educators? Question - Do DCPS go by Federal or local laws? Question - While your schools are organized and governed primarily under state law, the federal law limits the authority of the state. What leading federal court case limited your state's authority to operate separate schools for children of different races? What leading federal statute requires you to provide for handicapped children?
Notice someone else has to do a paper on this same topic. Are you able to assist me? My question - Have Public Schools Failed Society? Going back to school can really bring light bulbs on.
As much as schools are a reflection of society, this question is something of a 'chicken or the egg' dilema.... society and the chicken came first?
Schools fall short of idealistic expectations. So does funding and human nature. Have fun with your paper. Try reading "The Human Zoo" (& "The Nake Ape") by Desmond Morris for a realistic outlook.
