She and Reid need to get a clue as to what our country needs. TRIM THE FAT and make it work. We don't need millions of $'s going to such BS programs!! We are going to go belly up just like Japan! Is that what we want?!?! I'm am so tired of the the Dems. taking MY money and spreading MY wealth to those who sit on their ass#s and do nothing all day! Why does our liberal govt. feel that we need to continue to entitle this trash of our society?!? GET A JOB.......NOW!!!!!! I understand there are a very SMALL percentage of those on welfare and who collect food stamps that truly need it. The VAST majority acctually COULD work, but don't because they get free money. Would YOU work if you could smoke cigs and drink Budweiser on a daily basis? The worst part is, they continue to produce offspring. This just leads to a vicious cycle. I say women should only be allowed to have one child until they are off welfare. If they can't get a job in a year, fix them like a cat so they can't have any more. This would help the poor children that don't get the money that is intended for them because momma spent it on cigs, booze and dope. Am I being mean here?? No. I'm just stating the facts and the truth that our liberal government and media refuse to address. Welfare was NOT meant as a means to give free money to lazy ass@d people on a lifetime basis. It was meant to serve as a bridge to help those who BECAME unemployed until they were able to get back on their feet again. This process was meant to be and used to be a brief period of time so they wouldn't jeopardize our economy. Now look at what has happend to this program!! Complete and utter abuse! The worst part is, our government ALLOWS it!! My blood pressure is boiling. I need to go!!
I taught in Baltimore City for 2 years (but have been out of the classroom for a year and a half) so I do have experience in a high need area, and recognize challenges associated with urban areas.
I taught K and First and would like to do Prek/K if I go back. Any word on class size/support for ECE? DC Public schools haven't posted information for next year, but have seen postings for DC Prep and Apple Tree Institute Charter Schools. Any opinions on those schools would be helpful too.
When I try to teach the kids yell, fight, and scream profanity. Too many problems to handle? When another teacher or "principal" comes in they immediately act good. I walked in two months ago and need major help to survive 3 months.
I would appreciate your comments. Thank you for your time and consideration! p
-No comprehensive solutions but here's one idea, for what it's worth. When the kids come in, have a quiz on the board- yes, EVERY day, and grade it for the next day. If they're in control for the beginning of the class it'll be easier on you for the last part. Also, I've read about a DC math teacher who takes a photo with his cell phone of out of control students and emails it to parents. Very effective for him. Good luck.
What is going on? Where is anyone who actually cares about teachers, be they novice or veteran? Aren't we supposed to care about ourselves? Where is the solidarity and all of that good stuff? Let us know what's going on. We are not alone.

There is...See MoreI will try to make this as short as possible. My wife and I will be moving to DC next year, and my wife hopes to start a job as a foreign language teacher. She is a native Mandarin teacher, fluent in both French and English. She's got a very good, international academic background and experience teaching in both Taiwan and the US.
There is a school that is interested in hiring her to start a Mandarin program, but we are now trying to figure out how to go about getting her certified to teach in DC. So far, we've been told that she has to take the Praxis I & II.
As we collect all the information we need to get ready for the Praxis tests, I'm curious about work/study sort of programs for Mandarin teachers in the US. I've heard of government programs that try to get Mandarin teachers in American classrooms, but I don't know exactly how that applies to us. I also know that some states have programs that allow people to start teaching while also taking classes to get an education degree.
Does anyone know about these sorts of programs and if they exist in DC? Is anyone familiar with DC programs? I've found something called "Transition to Teaching," but I don't know if our situation applies.
If you need any more information or if anything is not clear, please ask. I'll be happy to clarify.
Also, I know most of the schools are crime ridden, but which on...See MoreI recently applied for an ESL teaching position in DC. I have a BA in English, MA in TESOL,certified in two states, experience nationally and internationally, but have not taken the Praxis Exam in my content area. Will I have any problems getting hired without taking the exam?
Also, I know most of the schools are crime ridden, but which ones should be avoided and which ones should I try to work in if hired?
I would ...See MoreI am a career switcher that is enrolled in an alternative teacher certification program. I'm looking to gain teacher training experience at the elementary level. I have a B.A in business management and M.ed in School Improvement. I have a lot of experience in working with at-risk youth as an Artists/Educator for the past 7 years.
