READING, 'RITING... RIPOFF? -- "Newpoint teachers still have not received last checks," by Pensacola News Journal's Mary Lett : "Teachers who were fired last spring by the troubled charter school management company Newpoint Education Partners (NEP) may not be paid the nearly $120,000 owed to them. NEP fired the teachers in June after the Escambia County School Board voted to terminate two of its three charter school contracts. All three schools, Newpoint High, Newpoint Academy and Five Flags Academy, which had a total of about 350 students, were closed. Superintendent Malcolm Thomas withheld $171,303 in state funding from NEP to insure teachers, staff and other creditors were paid, but that money is now tied up in litigation, according to Brandon Bogle, an attorney who represented the 19 teachers at the three schools."
