My family & I are planning to relocate to Hawaii. I have a BA in Early Childhood Education and an MA in Literacy Development with 4.5 years teaching. Any ideas on salary? I've read of people coming to HI with only $300- $500 in their pockets, and some with $3,000. I've been to Hawaii's DOE website but info is vague. Any other info would be appreciated. Thank- You.
My husband and I are Canadian teachers with New York state certification. We would love to work in Hawaii but understand that it`s difficult to get a visa. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks for your time, Katherine
I am a secondary education social studies major with an English minor. I have passed my certification tests for these subjects in Michigan. I finish my student teaching in May and begin looking for a job. The Michigan teaching job market is pretty rough and I was wondering what it is like in Hawaii for these subjects.
The job market is real good for teachers here, however... You can't even live on the salary, because the rentals have increase so much in the past 2 years. Don't even think about buying a home here. I know teachers that come here and leave within nine months.
Oh, I didn't mention the unions - don't even think of getting hired for the new school year until after Sept. 1, after school has been in session for one month.
The state has one school district. Only one!-the entire state.
Oh, well I could be wrong - If you have funds from another source that you can count on you don't need to worry about the money.
If you do go for it here - make sure you make copies of every thing, anytime you send any paperwork to any state or school. Then send it certified, etc.
You can count on it "getting lost".
Just a heads up.

Would like educated advice on where to send my son(current 6th grade)next year. Can afford private school, but want him to receive the support he needs as well. He has an IEP currently and doesn't receive much intervention, mostly just accomodation. Would like specific school (by name) advice. Thank you!!

We are in Haiku, Maui and I am very concerned about middle school placement. Please let me know what you discover! This is all very new. We have a doctor's appt tomorrow at Kaiser. Best wishes! vicki on Maui
Does anyone commute to the north shore? I turned down my first teaching job today because it would involve driving from Hawaii Kai to Waialua every day. I am panicking now because I feel like I did the wrong thing. Somebody help!

Don't worry--more jobs will come. And that commute would have been wild! Probably about 90 minutes each way, depending on traffic. I commuted from Laie to Mililani everyday my first year of teaching and it was exhausting.
I am moving to "The Big Island" in June as part of a job relocation for my husband. I am currently a Preschool Teacher in California and am looking to continue along the same lines for work when I move. I am wondering what the requirments are for preschool teaching there, and how hard is it to find a job. I do have units and plenty of experience.
My husband is already there, so I need to do some foot work before I get there myself. :)
If someone could give me some information, I would greatly appreciate it.
We need just a few more states to complete our 50 STates Valentine Exchange. It works just like a postcard exchange except we exchange valentines. Please email me with your school address ASAP if you would like to join us or want more details. Thanks so much!
Hi! I'm looking for 2 positions to teach summer school this summer. We are 2 teachers from California that would love to spend a couple of months in Oahu. Please send me any information on positions you know about. Elementary to High School. Public or Private Schools. Thanks!
I am graduating in May 2006 and will be certified in Illinois and moving to The Big Island. I want to know if there is a great need for teachers (although I hear there are)and what the salary is. Also, what are the state standards because I'd like to know if I need to take any state tests. Thank you!
I graduate this year as well and applied to the Hawaii Public School System. I know there is A LOT more job opportunities on the big island than there are in places such as Oahu, where I am going next year. This website can give you a lot of info about what they are looking for, online applications, and salary info. Hawaii Schools are ranked 44th in the nation; they need good teachers. There are also some AMAZING private schools around and if I were you I would look into applying to some as well.

I am looking for certified teachers to homeschool my 9th grade twins now through may '06. We have all the text books and will be continuing the curriculum from California. Subjects are Algebra, pre-algebra, biology, modern world history and english. We require 3 hours instruction a week for each class, have flexible hours and will pay cash.
