Hi, I am going to be teaching music, art, and movement to kindergartners next year. This will replace their specials. Is this done at anyone's school? If so do you have any ideas for me? Thanks so much.

Teachers are divided by grades (lower el., upper el., intermediate/high school). They cover lots of things regarding music, movement, and art and give lots of great ideas.
We have a music teacher, but the kids only get their "specials" once every eighth instructional day. It really still needs to be supplemented by the reg. ed. teacher.
There are lots of good movement songs from Greg and Steve, and there is a cd out there...can't remember the name...which has 50s songs but is for movement (song is in the background and you listen to the instructions...ex. "Touch shoulders...waist....knees...toes..."). That 50s one is really fun. Look up Aerobic songs for kids.
With art, it's fun to do pastels with them and have them explore the medium (to begin with). Kids need to be able to EXPLORE whatever it is, initially. Then you can "guide" them a bit after that. With pastels, make sure to use sulphite paper (not reg. construction paper) since it will hold up and not fall apart when smearing the colors with fingers.

I am currently an Elementary teacher in England. I have been teaching for just about a year. We are planning to move to Oahu this coming December. I have degrees in English Language and Economics, therefore I could teach English or Maths. However, I am trained to teach the elementary level here in England but I couldn't teach in High School as I don't have the training to teach this level. My questions are: How easy is it to get an elementary teaching post?; and could I teach in high school level in Hawaii althought I don't have the training to teach this level? Any input from you guys will be very much appreaciated.

Our project centers around a stuffed puppy named Ollie! He wants to travel across the country meeting children from each state. We are looking for a participating class from EACH OF THE 50 STATES!
Ollie is based on the story of a real dog named Owney that was adopted by Postal workers in the late 1800's. He traveled around the country on trains from post office to post office.

I am a licensed elementary education teacher in Hawaii. I am also in the Hawaii DOE system. (My first pick was Central Oahu and then Leeward Oahu.) It is already July 18, 2007, and I have only gotten 3 phone calls for interviews. What's going on? I thought there was a teacher shortage. Am I the only one not getting many calls for interviews at public elementary schools on Oahu? Please let me know what your experience has been in looking for a teaching position? Thanks.
Sorry, guess I was unclear. I did get the job because I went through the principal first. After that, it was all hoops to jump through to make myself eligible for him to hire me. I knew of the school where I wanted to work and made contacts through the school instead of just applying to HIDOE like they want. I'm not sure I would have gotten a job otherwise. Looks like someone just posted that there are too many El Ed teachers here.

I was wondering if you found a teaching position? I am relocating to Aiea, Oahu by June/July 2008 and I hope to get a job for the next school year. It's so funny that my first pick is also Central Oahu and then Leeward Oahu!
I am certified in secondary ed. social studies and discouraged at the fact that a lot of the shortages are in special ed., math and science. Do you have any advice to help me in my own job search?
Hope to you hear from you soon.

Hi, I'm very interested in subbing on Maui. In Lahaina, Kahului, and Wailuku specifically. I would appreciate any advice concerning what the proper first steps to take are.
I have found the "Requirements for Employment" chart on the Department of Education website at this address:

If anyone has had experience with this and could tell me about it, thanks! Sky

Hello from Texas! We need a classroom in Hawaii to swap postcards with us. You would send a postcard to a classroom in each state and in return you get 49 postcards sent to your class. Interested? If not, Maybe you know of a colleague who would be. If so pass this on to them.
I am starting a post card exchange for the 2007-2008 school year. We will start mailing out postcards September 10th and have them all mailed out by April 1st. I will email you a list of participants by August 27th with the addresses.
I want this to be a learning experience for my students. They will experience writing addresses and they will learn the locations and a few facts about each state. You can send pre-made postcards or make them yourself.
Once I get the list of participants (with their school addresses) I will mail one to everyone on the list. Each class would send a postcard to everyone on the list. So, by the end of the exchange, your class would send a postcard to hopefully every state and receive one from every state too! The real purpose is to have a fun way to study each state.
Please keep in mind that if you decide to drop out of the exchange, you need to let me know so the students are not disappointed. I want this to be an awesome experience for our students so, please sign up for our exchange.
Email me your name, address, email address, and state if you would like to join. You can participate from any grade level. [email removed]
Please join!! Here are the states we still need! Delaware Hawaii Idaho Iowa Kansas Louisiana Maine New Mexico Rhode Island South Dakota Utah Vermont Washington West Virginia Wisconsin
Email me if you would like to join! [email removed]
Hi, I'm looking for a teacher of mine I had back in Texas that has recently married and moved to Hawaii. I know this is a shot in the dark, but I figured I would try. Anyone know an English teacher with the first name Erin that moved to Hawaii from probably Texas. It is very important that I locate her. Thanks!
