I look forward to hearing from you soon! (First come, first served!)
If your principal wanted to be "fair" about it, he/she should have opened the position to other teachers. That is quite a bit of money. I'm sure there is a protocol in place for situations like yours. And it sounds as though your principal wasn't following it.
Hi, I recently read about the upcoming teacher furlough days. How do the teachers really feel about this? I taught in Georgia for a bit and they also have furlough days, although nothing like Hawaii. Give me your thoughts:)

In Nevada our governor wants to cut teachers' salaries, but not the number of days in the week.... So less money for teachers --- BUT the same number of days. When Nevada was riding high on its successes, teachers were NOT reaping any rewards. In fact state employees were getting 15-20% pay raises and teachers were scumming by with 2-3% salary boosts. The reasons were simple: there are fewer state employees and so many teachers,,,,, the teachers were made to carry less in salary boosts. Now that the state is suffering from economic malaise, teachers are being asked to take on the budget deficits. It's NOT fair or right

Aloha Nala, I see Clara says it's appauling ... well hopefully Clara is not teaching spelling. Actually most Teachers find taking a 8% pay cut is a fair exchange for gaining over three weeks more vacation for this year and next. We get to have really worthwhile weekends where we can enjoy our beautiful surroundings. Hopefully the shorter year will be a constant and with the good mood all the Teachers are in with this new four day week it's possible that our keiki will score better on our annual tests this year than ever before. So all you in the 49 states watch us closely and a new trend may emerge where less is more. Loving it with only 160 days of students. Paddy

We are an evolving, grassroots organization consisting of many parents, teachers, civic organizations and citizens who believe that the furlough Fridays policy is detrimental to Hawaii and its people. Our mission is to raise awareness about this issue and to garner enough support to ensure that it is reversed. We also want to close the door legislatively so that such policies which could endanger the future our youth are no longer possible.
We intend to accomplish this by waging a campaign to include advertising, a professional lobbyist, hiring experts in education and child development and maintaining a dedicated, informative, interactive website.

That's terrific you want to move to Hawaii to teach! I'm going to be moving back home soon and applying for licensing there myself. I'm going to apply before I get there (to see if I qualify for the returning resident bonus).
Check out the Hawaii Department of Education site. The current shortage is in Special Education. You may also qualify for a recruitment bonus as well.

Also, check out the Hawai'i Teachers Standard Board, regarding licensing in Hawaii: [link removed]
Good luck! Apply now and see if you can qualify for the recruitment bonus in Special Ed.

I'm wondering what it would take for me (a certified Alberta teacher) to move to Hawaii and teach. I know somehow I would have to become a dual citizen most likely. If anyone has some information on how I would start to line things up let me know. Im willing to move almost anywhere in the state (possibly even California,Miami and Arizona too).
