I'm a 5th grade teacher looking for an Iowa teacher to sign up for our postcard exchange. If you're interested, go to the following link and input your information.
In general, out schools are pretty decent, but the quality varies widely. I urge you to be very cautious and check out the schools before buying or renting.
Do not be afraid of the larger rural school districts. Some of them are great.
Due diligence goes a long way! Long gone are the days when Iowa schools were consistently tops in the nation. But don't get me started on that one.
Susie DruesselI personally believe that many schools in the Des Moines metro area are good. Ankeny, West Des Moines, Waukee. Do you have it narrowed down to what part of Iowa?
I retired. From Illinois teaching system. In July. I taught in Iowa over 20 years ago . Where do I go to find out if I have any retirement money? Thanks

"I hear many people talk about tolerance and how we must learn to be tolerant toward those who are different from us. When we tolerate something, we put up with it temporarily until it is gone. We tolerate a toothache, back pain, and loud music coming from a neighbor’s house. Why would we ever put what we do with children in the same category? Instead, we should celebrate the differences of our children."

I am thinking of moving to Iowa in order to find work. I have a Type 03 Illinois license with middle school endorsements. Has anyone gone through the process of obtaining Iowa license from Illinois. I have heard it is difficult and they (Iowa) require additional classes.

Go to the Iowa Department of Education webpage(type in Iowa Department of Education in your search engine), then go to the Education Licensure tab and see if that will give you the information that you need. Hope this helps.
I went to their webpage and it is so confusing. It is different requirements for Illinois. I was hoping someone has been through the process and give some pointers.

Will they be in the Des Moines Metro area or one of the suburbs? Each suburb seems to have their own district and there are about six to eight districts in the area.
I just found this area, it's neat to know you can talk to other Iowans. I'm in central Iowa, and I teach 6-8 Gifted/Talented,7th and 8th grade guidance, and 7th grade reading and language arts.

Hi everyone-2 years away from retirement I find a site needed many years ago. For all new to the profession don't let this budget crunch get you down-there is a rainbow ahead-probably no pot of gold but the rainbow will perk you up and give you hope. Advice-get on your negotiations team and find out how things work-definitely join ISEA and participate. I have really enjoyed working with Unit 2 as a member of the executive board. Above all enjoy your kids and make their day fun then yours will be too. More advice-talk to anyone from another state and you will know just how great Iowa education programs really are.
I'm in Sioux City and teach 7th gr. SPED (my first year teaching it) at a three-month old middle school. Two weeks ago the word was out that 40 teachers would be laid off. Found out that 4 are SPED teachers and my position is involved. I just found out that I was recommended for involuntary tranfer by SPED director and now I have to wait and see what's going on. Not thrilled since it's at a high school. Anyone else personally feeling the "crunch" here in Iowa?
