You could send a card or letter to "any Canadian Forces member" and just keep the correspondence if the recipient writes back. If you'd like to send mail to Canadian troops in other areas of the world, check out this website: [link removed]
** Note that the lines "Rank/Initials/Name" and "Unit/Section" of the operational address are to be replaced with "Any Canadian Forces member". **

Also in Iowa, our middle school is just getting into AR this winter. We have 850+ kids and are just enforcing the rule that you must have an AR book with you at all times. At the last faculty mtg, the principal decided that if silent reading time is assigned on any given day and a student does not have an AR book with them, they are to be assigned a 100 word essay and they will complete that before the class is over. If not done, they get a referral. The two of us that teach ESL were concerned (and all of the SPED teachers, too) because our library is geared for 6th-8th gr. readers and there aren't any AR books for our very low level kids to read. So, he said that, at this time, they must have a reading book of their choice with them. One goal for the library is to find the money to buy a lot of low level books for all of these kids. We all have AR downloaded on our computers but I don't teach reading so I don't have to participate in the program. It's there in case there are a few free moments before the bell and if my students wish to take a test. I doubt that happens since there aren't any AR books for my beginners and intermediates. I did hear that each student is to read 30 points worth of books. I guess when they discuss it, I don't pay attention since I'm not participating. If I hear anything about incentives, etc, I'll post.
I am trying to locate a former teacher from Decorah Iowa elementary school. Her name is Carol M Hanson and she taught 6th grade in Decorah until about 1973. I believe she then moved to Madison Wisconsin. I believe her maiden name was Peterson. If anyone could give me more information on how to locate her, I would appreciate it. Thank you.
