I'm just wondering. I think that I can teach here without one. I won't join NEA because they support abortion rights. Hey! If everybody had an abortion, we wouldn't have jobs now would we?
This year I'll be teaching little ones how to hold a pencil. Does this need to be a major thing? Is how they hold a pencil going to affect how their brain works later? I'll teach them the correct way, but it's not a battle I'm willing to fight for those who hold them differently. as long as their writing is legible, Idon't have a problem, but I don't want to be missing something crucial developmentally!

I think it is important that kids learn to hold their pencils correctly. There are certain muscles in the hand that are designed for writing. If they use the wrong ones, their hands become fatigued very easily when they're writing, especially in the upper grades when they must do lots of writing. They also need to start and stop their letters correctly. It has to do with the way their brain processes reading and writing. If you say, "Oh, well, as long as the letter looks right, who cares how they made it?" then you'll have students that may have trouble reading.

I am a math teacher who holds my pen the "wrong" way. It didn't interfer with my ability to do math.
I researched whether or not holding the pen the wrong way leads to reading problems, and I found nothing to substantiate this conjecture. I found no research that shows that certain muscles in the hand are designed for writing, which is no surprise, as the hand was developed long before the pencil. It seems obvious to me that the muscles that your hand uses will develop strength, no matter how you hold the pencil.
No child would continue to hold a pencil in a way that makes writing painful, so just let them be.
Hello, I am a board certified dermatician. I would like to get a mailing list of Treasure Valley teachers in order to offer a "school's out" special. I offer Permanent Cosmetics including: eyelash enhancement, eyebrows, eyeliner, lip liner, and lip full color. Is there a preffered method of contacting teachers? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Elaine
We teachers are bright enough to know how to find your services, and others, IF we are ever interested. We don't appreciate telemarketing or junk mail. Save your stamps. If you want to advertise, put your ad in the newspaper. We teachers can read also, and if we are interested we will go to you.
Those of you in Idaho, if you have the chance, take the Teaching with Technology course sponsored by Albertsons. I took it a week ago and really enjoyed it, plus I got two easy credits and will get my third credit this coming school year.
I joined a postcard exchange and we are still short a few states. If you are interested, here is the explanation from the project leader and a URL to her site for more information.
Hi, I - have over thirty-five teachers already involved in a Postcard Exchange, and would like you to consider joining too!
In September I will provide labels for all the schools involved, all you have to do is mail postcards from your state to the teachers on the labels. All the teachers will do the same, and you will receive postcards from all over the United States.
This is a great project to get your students involved in.
No cost except for the postcards and stamps to mail the postcards (students can bring them in!)
Here are the states we still need:
Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Idaho, Maine, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia, Wyoming.
Please email me only if you see your state listed here and want to be a part of this great activity: [email removed]
Please pass this on to fellow teachers who may be interested.

I have published one book: 7001 RESUMES, it is a job search book and you can find it on the internet in most book sites. I will have two more coming out soon: JUMP START YOUR CAREER, and JUMP START YOUR COMPUTER SKILLS. The "Career" book is for HS grads. and Adults entering the world of work for the first time. And the computer book is for training in the classroom. I have been developing it for over 2 years. They are coming soon. I hope to publish Jump start, this fall, and the computer book in the Spring of 2003.
If you are interested let me know. I have taught 7,001 in Adult Ed. classes as a Career training book.
For information give me a call at 714-996-4221 or 714-515- 6103 or E-mail me.....
The computer book, I believe is better that "Future Kids" and should cost a lot less.
my book 7,001 is now in some colleges, Libraries, HS, and ROP's throughout America.
Here's a public invitation for application to the IndiVisual/Hewlett-Packard 'Read for Life' scholarship. I feel this is important to share with the public and hopeful you will help the spread the word with teachers and schools administrators about this great scholarship opportunity to help struggling readers.
The 'Read for Life' scholarship consists of a wireless mobile reading lab complete with 5 Hewlett-Packard laptop PCs complete and 3 years unlimited student-use of IndiVisual Reading ($25,000 value). Another plus with this scholarship is the fact that Dr. John Manning, a former president of the International Reading Association, is the author/advisor behind the IndiVisual Reading program. The scholarship is available to any public, private, parochial or charter school within the United States.
Also where in Idaho are you?
You can let me know when/if you email me.
