I'm trying to find an old school counselor that I had when I was in Cunningham Elementary School. Her name was Beth Hunt and she was a really awesome counselor, she really cared. She made a great impact on my life and I would like to let her know, and thank her for doing such a great job. It was about 1996 that she was there, so its been a really long time. I recall her moving, and mentioning she would be teaching in Delaware County Schools, possibly Daleville. Any help is greatly appreciated.
I sent a letter to my son's teacher this morning asking her to tell me the procedures for turning in homework, and if she had any suggestions on "what" items to keep at his desk so he does not have to keep running to his cubby to get the proper materials to do an assignment while at school...because he is "afraid" to ask her to go to the cubby to get the materials and then he just borrows some off another kid. (she is a very strict/mean spirited teacher and all the kids are scared to death of her. She has a reputation!!) And he keeps doing his homework but the next day it is still in his homework folder...I ask him what the procedures were and he said "I don't know.. She didn't ask for it..." I asked him if he was supposed to turn it in or if she was supposed to ask him for it. He said, "I don't know, she didn't say". So since he evidentally has no clue as to what to do and his grades are suffering for it and he is too afraid of her to ask... I asked her.. He took the letter to school today and she took it out of the envelope and told him... "why don't you quit acting like a first grader and grow up... you are in 5th grade now so act like it. Your mom may baby you, but I'm not going to".... He had no clue what I wrote her so he was dumbfounded. Yes I baby my child because I love him and want him to learn... But if he doesn't understand something then he needs someone to tell him the rules and if she won't then I would like to help him understand. But she just crushed him today instead of taking him aside and saying... "OK...this is how it works...pay attention..." I'm so frustrated... I can see her side of it... but then again... if he doesn't understand...then he doesn't understand... and she as a teacher needs to make sure that he understands no matter what it takes... they keep telling the parents that we need to get involved...but when we try, they just blow us off and belittle our children. What is a better way to approach this situation? Should I just let him fail? If she won't even respond to a letter, then how can I get her to work with me to make sure my son gets the education that he needs? Can someone offer some suggestions? Is this the normal way to talk to kids to "toughen them up"?
As a teacher, let me tell you, your child is not the only child this teacher has to look after. Teaching is a complex job and oftentimes teachers do not have time to deal with a single issue from a concerned parent - especially one that sends in a note such as you did. You have a valid concern about this teacher's classroom organization. However, perhaps you should call the teacher or go to the school to ask her rather than sending a letter. Also, remember that it is highly possible your child's interpretation of this teacher is a little harsh - one more reason to meet with her to figure this out for yourself.
if the teacher won't help him then you should find some time and talk to her. Talk face to face withe her get the prociders and then tell them to your son or take him with you. You can also try and ask the parents of other children
Thanks for all the info, I am about to take it for the first time tomorrow and am so scared! I just hope it is still the same as the one that is posted on here... anyone know yet if it is?? Thanks and wish me luck!!
A group of 4 teacher friends from Illiniois are going to have fun around the Keystone Crossing/Castleton area soon. Are there any teacher stores in the area or not too far away? We wouldn't want to miss anything great! Thanks in advance.

United Art and Education is wonderful! There is one around Castleton and also Greenwood (my favorite).
Why is it so hard to find a high school math position in Indiana? I spent all summer interviewing in the western coutnies. I am mid-40 and have no teaching experience. I have been told that math teachers are in demand, but I don't find that to be true. I am wondering if my age is an issue. I interviewed at a school and was told that they were looking for teacher with experience. Then I substituted there and found out that the new math teacher is fresh out of college. I am not sure if I should give up looking for a job and go back to my old career.
I had a friend when I lived in northern Indiana who returned to school to get her math education degree so she could teach math at the high school level. She found out that she was looked over for most positions in that area because they also wanted someone to coach a sport as well as teach math. She lacked the coaching expertise. When I think about my own years in Indiana high school, most of the men I had for math were either a football or basketball coach. Have you considered that THAT might be an underlining reason you have not found that math job? Just a thought. Oh, that friend got a job in something totally different then teaching and stayed with that job instead. Good Luck.

Does anyone have a site I can go to to view salary schedules for teachers. I am in Fort Wayne and can't locate any salary schedules on the local districts websites or through online searches.
I am getting my masters in library media and was wondering what the starting pay would approximately be in this area.
Dale, I was born and raised in southeastern Indiana. Even after being gone for almost 40 years, I still miss the beauty that is found in the state of Indiana. I always love the fall and the breathtaking beauty of all the leave changing colors. Thanks for the memories. On 10/15/06, Dale wrote: > A Nice Place to Visit!
