Praxis II ART 133 and 132

I took the Praxis II ART: CONTENT, TRADITIONS, CRITICISM, AESTHETICS and ART: CONTENT KNOWLEDGE on 4/25/09 in Oregon.

I studied a ton...and don't think I could have done any more. There is just know way to know it all.

The essays for the 132 ART: CONTENT, TRADITIONS, CRITICISM, AESTHETICS I had were as follows: #1 Painting by Caravaggio with Virgin, child and 2 people in prayer Painting by Artmesia Gentilleschi of Judith with her made servant (and head of Holfornes I think).

They asked you to state how you could see the influence of Caravaggio on Gentilleschi's work in 3 areas, figures, light and composition. Then they asked you to state why the pieces were different.

#2 They showed a quilt by Faith Ringgold. They asked about the composition and subject, as well as to discuss the history/reasons behind the piece

Then, you had to agree with the statement or refute it. Give one example of western eauropean art that supported your argument and 1 example of non-western European art that supported your argument.

Questions/Topics I can remember for the 133 ART: CONTENT KNOWLEDGE were as follows: • There were very few questions on easier, well-known subjects like Impressionism, most required a little more knowledge • Less architecture and photography than I thought there would be • Several questions on the Harlem renaissance-jacob lawrence • Porch of the Maidens (I did not know this, but it was the caryatids) • Perspective (2 questions on this-who invented linear and what is single point) • Joseph Audobon-bird drawings • Crystal Palace and Eiffel Tower • Some questions on Neoclassicism/romanticism • Art Making- photography-a few, pottery a few more, safety like solvents and acid baths, i.e. what is dangerous to add to an acid bath (H2O, wood, paper?) • Color on a computer-Cmyk and a resolution question-think it was a DPI questions but can’t remember • How do you clean/thin oil paint (maybe it asked fat vs. lean) • What is rabbit glue used for • What is used in clay that can harm skin-turpentine, iron? • Plastelline • Frottage • Print making such as etching-wax ground • Tromp l’oielle • Question about the change in value in a line drawing indicates what (recessed shape, light, shape that comes out?) • Gesture drawing • Which pencil was the not an option for hard/soft (H, HB, B and S) • Showed a Brancusi scultpture-asked what form (I think it was monolith) • Chiarroscuro • Contraposto • What is the true color of an object called (something like this but can’t remember the term) • Eastern art-like pagoda • What was the Taj Mahal originally used for • Chagall/Chirico • Rosa Bonheur-horse paintings • Who was a baroque classicist • Anselm Keiffer • Kinetic art-calder • Vermeer • Rembrandt • Several questions on gothic cathedrals-one was on Chartres. Other was which was the 1st, and listed 4 cathedrals in France I believe. • Counter reformation • Battle of Hastings -tapestry • Clement Greenberg-art critic…for who?

I studied and made cards almost exclusively from the Praxis book (which is terrible, but good for art terms to cover) and from the Annotated Mona Lisa. I used this book cover to cover. ArtLex was great-concise and great for vocabart terms and safety… as well as Artchive for more in depth on each artist. I just took a 19th c art class so that helped there, but other than that I got my BFA over 10 years ago and could barely remember anything. I am not sure I passed but hopeful! Definitely bullet your essays, or you WILL run out of time.
