I'm teaching in a small town, and I started out teaching high school English. We don't have very much turnover AT ALL around here. Rarely do we have anyone who leaves after a couple of years, and they're typically all people who aren't from around here. (We're rural and high poverty, which isn't exactly everyone's preference.)
Here's a sample of the job market for English here. In 1993 I subbed and took two long-term positions for English teachers on medical leaves. The following year I was hired as a half-time English teacher. The next year the position was gone, but I told them I was interested in another position when one became available. It was 2004 before another job opened. (I turned it down because I'd decided I liked my middle school position.)

They are Paraguay (soccer and home stay), Panama, Turkey, Costa Rica and Thailand. These are with community service and home stays. They may go to [link removed].

I am very interested in starting a career in teaching. I have been substituting for the past month, and it is very rewarding. I have a degree in Business. There is an opening at the local vocational school for a business teacher. Does anyone have any experience or advice on how to apply? Is a teaching certificate required if I will be teaching in a vocational classroom? Thank you for your help!
I have been offered a pre-advance contract for Jefferson County in Lousiville, Kentucky. I have been offered a starting pay of 36,000 a year. I am a single mother of three and I would like to know if this is a sufficent amount to live in a nice three bedroom home and/or apartment. What is the normal cost for this type of housing and typically how much are the utilites a month.
I don't know about Louisville, but I have some friends who live in Lexington, which would probably be pretty close in amount.
One pays $750 a month for a two bedroom apartment in a decent part of town. She has two roommates. The other pays $950 for a two bedroom apartment in a nicer, newer area. It's just she and her husband there. I have no idea about their utilities. I'm about 45 miles from Lexington, and our phone, cable, gas, water/sewer, electric, and trash pickup runs about $350 a month. I'm in a rural area, and I know that we pay less than most places. (My house payment is more than $100 less than the friend with two roommates.)
I did have friends in Louisville years ago. They both worked IN Louisville, but they had an apartment just outside the metro area, and it was much less expensive.
I have a question for everyone. I pasted the Praxis 0011 for general education in June,06. Then after requesting to do my intern I was told that that test is no longer any good. When I was signing up for the test ETS had posted on there web page the required passing scores for this test in the state of Ky. THe state standards board told me that there were 30 individuals that this has happened to. If any on you know one of these individuals please let me know. I am willing to fight this and would like to hear from the others as well. Any sugestions???
It would not be so bad excep that I took this test 17 times before passing, and graduated with a 3.8 GPA and alread have completed my Masters with a 3.9 GPA (althought typing might not show,HAHA)
My attention was caught by the Louisville Courier Journal article Thursday 4/25. She had been Superintindent of Schools in Scottsdale Az and in St. Charles Ill. Some concern that the president & vice president of Scottsdale (Ariz) teachers Association said Erwin did not work well with teachers and "ruled by intimidation." KEA pres. said "We have contacted our counterparts in Illinois, and they have had some good things to say about her." Hmmmm?
