Math teachers at our school are exempt from providing portfolio pieces per instructions from our English Department. They realize that high scoring portfolio prompts are not effective in math classes. The head of our Math Department contacted our Region Service Center to get examples of high-scoring math portfolio pieces -- they could not provide ANY examples. Also, a former Writing Consultant from KDE stated in an in-service that math pieces would not score well and time would be better spent covering math content.
I think your department would be well served to try to be exempt from this requirement. Difficult, I know, but why waste time going through motions to produce a piece that does not meet the requirements of a high scoring piece? I am not a math teacher. I can produce a reasonable portfolio piece in my content area. I think all content areas can except math. Given the requirements for tone and voice, I do not understand why math pieces would be appropriate.

I'm conducting a one question survey. If you have taken the Praxis II Content Knowledge Exam in your discipline, did you find the exam valid? Yes or No and Why or why not? This information will be used to determine whether or not to use this exam as a measure of content knowledge for teachers applying for advanced compensation. We already have portfolio and performance measurements, but we are trying to determine which exam would be appropriate to get an objective measure of content knowledge.
I also believe after getting straight A's on 30 hrs of course work. I have taken the praxis 3 times and get just close enough to passing it and do not. Unfortunately, I am a fast track teacher who is a go getter. At 47, I'm teaching in a classroom and have been doing so since July 02. Sadly enough, if I fail to pass this core content test I will be out the door in 1 1/2 years. I'm spending a lot of money try to pass the test. Roy

I guess I feel some what diffrent than the others. I am entering teaching at 47 years old and have been out of school for alot of years. The content knowledge test was tough, I took it in Social Studies that is a broad field. I passed it the first try. But I spent hour apon hour preparing. Is any test going to assess each persons knowledge level perfectly? NO but there has to be some standard. >> >> On 1/06/03, Dan wrote: >>> Hi and Happy New Year, >>> >>> I'm conducting a one question survey. The problem is, the student loans kept mounting and mounting a nd now she will be paying on these until retirement. How about debt relied for teachers who teach reading & language arts...or even K-5 certification? I owe $70,000 and pay $600 per month...Do kids today realize that teacher may make $10 per hour? Colleges really should get this information out. Factor in all our time towards school...$10 per hour...but I wouldn't do anything else!
Anyway, any help or advice would be appreciated.

A couple of ideas: 1. Mammoth Cave; has lodging there are several caving tours including one that last 6 hours and hiking, camping. Nearby is Horse Cave Theatre which has a professional troupe and a golf course is close. 2. Land Between The Lakes has hiking camping houseboat rentals golf. 3. There is Big Sandy that sits between TN and KY which has extensive beautiful hiking, nice campgrounds fishing, close by in Sturgis is a reconstructed coal mine one may tour along with a train ride up into the mountians 4. If you are into the city the only two places would be Louisville where there is a lot of shopping from antiques to malls, the Louisville Slugger Museum, plays, all types of music venues, parks for jopgging close by is Cinncinati with the Reds baseball team.

Okay all you Kentucky special ed teachers are you guys ready for testing this year? Now remember if modifications and adaptations are correctly implemented then there is no reason a special ed student should score novice. I just can't figure out the correct implementation to have the SLD, written language disabled students with word retreval problems and limited IQs to score anything but novice. Oh my!
It is that time of year to look into the future and look for new adventure. This is the time to think about bringing an exchange teacher and/or student into your home, community, and/or school for next year. There is no cost to your school system to host a teacher. Schools who have discovered our programs have one every year. There is still time for you to apply as an AFS Global Educator for the summer or the fall semester or year. What better way to help promote peace than to be involved with a great organization with this as their main mission.
Contact AFS-USA through the web sites or call 1-800-876-2377 for more details and bulletins. The organization also always needs volunteers if you feel that you can not go or host. There is always a place for you. I am a school counselor, sponsor of an AFS Club at my school, and serve as the PR Chair for the Miss Tennky Area Leadership Team. I have hosted 10 times and gone as a global educator to Thailand. Take this opportunity to make a difference for all with whom you are involved.
Just wondering if everyone is as stressed as I am about the TEST! I teach 5th grade and am absolutely killing myself trying to get all the core content in before the testing window. I feel like I can't do a good job teaching because I have to cram so much into every day. We can't spend adequate time on any concept-just when the kids are really enjoying a topic, I have to move on to the next one. I wish we didn't have the test looming over our heads everyday. The children are feeling the stress just as much as I am. I feel like I am preparing my kids to take a test instead of giving them a well-rounded education.

Yes, Fox that is all we're doing prepping for the test from January until testing. They're not being properly taught. I am ready for a revolt!

Hey Fox, are you still out there prepping for those test in a few weeks, 30 something days? This is the time of year I love being a resource room teacher expecially for the 13, 4th and 5th graders I have. Let's see 5th grade is no longer teaching reading because they have been doubling up on mathematics and social studies which takes up 4 hours of the school day. Add to that an hour of arts and humanities taught now instead of science we are up to 5 hours a day. Add 25 min. for lunch, 20 for recess and 30 min for a special class and that equals no reading! Now let's ask how much the reading resource room students have digressed since January? On to 4th grade WOW guess what they are stressing right now? You guessed it science, reading and those writing portfolios. I am so appreciative of our principal reminding me that we will have no novices this year. I did remind her that we have several students with IQs below 60, baby those kids can flat out write a feature article! Not to mention those who have a writing disability with limited vocabulary and have reading levels below 2nd grade.
