My family and I have recently relocated to the Mandeville/Covington area because of my husbands job. I am still teaching kindergarten in my previous position (Walthall Co., MS) because I was unable to find a job in LA. I have an hour and fifteen minute commute, and though I love my school, I am a mom and I really need to work closer to my new home....See More

Louisiannie Do you have your Louisiana paperwork done?

Continuing to teach in Mississippi isn't going to help you get hired in St. Tammany if you don't have Louisiana certification. Legally, the district must hire anyone "qualified" on paper before they look elsewhere.

If I were you, I'd resign the Mississippi position as soon as feasible, an...See More

kara I hope to work in St. Tammany Parish also! I'm not certified yet though! I am currently living in Tangipahoa Parish. It is a little easier to find jobs here, althought it often still depends on who you know in the system. I would encourage you to come to Amite, LA where the school board office is and meet some people. It's about 45 minutes from Man...See More

    Hello,

I would like to get some thoughts on teaching in St. Charles Parish. I plan on moving and teaching in St. Charles Parish area in the Spring of 2010. I know it is a great Parish to live work and raise children; but I would like to get first hand information from teachers who work or had worked in the Parish.

I thank you in a...See More
Kara I know you are looking for first-hand experience, but I'm going to share my limited experience with you! I hope you don't mind!! I am an Alt. Cert. student at SLU in Hammond. I was able to observe at J. B. Martin and Destrehan. I LOVED it! The atmosphere is sooo warm and inviting! I didn't spend much time at Destrehan, but I observed 4 teachers at ...See More

We are moving from Alaska to Louisiana - I am planning to work on National Board Certification while I am here in AK. My questions is - if awarded, what are the benefits of having it in LA? I am ESL teacher, national board cert. will be in Teaching English as a New Language. Can someone share thoughts about his/her experience of working as ESL teac...See More
Louisiannie Do you know where in Louisiana?

Louisiana got on board with National Board a little late, but in a big way. The certification will definitely get you in many doors, but in ESL you won't have trouble finding a job anyway.

The state adds $5000 to your salary for the 10 years of the certificate. Some local school boards add more. Ba...See More

I would like to know if anyone is utilizing Power Teaching techniques in their classroom. I have been using WBT for the last year with some success. I would love to learn from others.

    Thanks!
    Hi -

I just submitted my application to teachNOLA yesterday! I just recently stumbled on the program & I am pretty nervous about the outcome. I just moved to Mississippi from Seattle & I am really hoping for this opportunity.

I guess I am mostly concerned about the amount of applicants & available teaching positions. I...See More

Kimmie br> > Run for the hills!! Oh, there will be plenty of available positions...I was offered four. I am a 17 year veteran teacher, and after 3 months of trying to teach in the RSD, I was ready to quit. I have experience with low income students, who live in dangerous areas with gang infiltration, but nothing could have prepared me for the worst ...See More

Kimmie I teach in Jefferson Parish, and live in Old Jefferson. My school and my neighborhood are very safe places. Working for JPPSS is the best thing that ever happened to me!! And, living in New Orleans rocks!!

A friend of mine told me how much he loves Louisiana, Shreveport to be exact. He has also told me about the great pay (great compared to what we are dealing with in AZ right now) and the need for teachers. I thought I would go straight to the source to find out more info.

Is joining the Union a requirement? Do you have to pay for your own ...See More

I am in my fifth year of teaching, the middle of the second year at the middle school I was working at. When I got to school one day, my principal (not a very friendly person to say the least) informed me that my computer had been confiscated and brought to the district technology department because someone had reported that I was looking at adult ...See More
I currently work in accounting for a private company but I've always wanted to do something with more of a human touch. My ex-boyfriend would say my granola-crunching, hippie liberal side is coming out. I just put in an application for Teachnola with the hopes of teaching math. I've been to New Orleans since Katrina and I don't live too far away. I...See More
Louisiannie If you can teach math (or science), you can write your own ticket.

    Good luck.
