Continuing to teach in Mississippi isn't going to help you get hired in St. Tammany if you don't have Louisiana certification. Legally, the district must hire anyone "qualified" on paper before they look elsewhere.
If I were you, I'd resign the Mississippi position as soon as feasible, and find ANY Louisiana position in a nearby rural parish. Look for one that won't be such a long commute, and hopefully is in the direction of a university if you need to pick up any courses to get your Louisiana credentials straight.
Once you have your Louisiana cred, you will find it easier to get into St. Tammany. Good luck! It's a great system.
Good luck on your search. I also agree that substituting in St. Tammany Parish would be worth your while. Since you are certified in another state the pay would be substantially higher than if you were not. I know it's not the best situation, but it would help you get your name around!
I would like to get some thoughts on teaching in St. Charles Parish. I plan on moving and teaching in St. Charles Parish area in the Spring of 2010. I know it is a great Parish to live work and raise children; but I would like to get first hand information from teachers who work or had worked in the Parish.
Louisiana got on board with National Board a little late, but in a big way. The certification will definitely get you in many doors, but in ESL you won't have trouble finding a job anyway.
The state adds $5000 to your salary for the 10 years of the certificate. Some local school boards add more. Baton Rouge (East Baton Rouge Parish), for example, matches the state supplement, so you would make $10,000 more than the salary schedule indicates for your degrees and experience.
This supplement only applies to public schools. The local systems have some charters, but don't go near a state charter with a 10-foot pole!

I would like to know if anyone is utilizing Power Teaching techniques in their classroom. I have been using WBT for the last year with some success. I would love to learn from others.
I just submitted my application to teachNOLA yesterday! I just recently stumbled on the program & I am pretty nervous about the outcome. I just moved to Mississippi from Seattle & I am really hoping for this opportunity.
I guess I am mostly concerned about the amount of applicants & available teaching positions. I would love to work with the RSD kids. Who knows though. I guess all I can do now is wait and see.
KimmieI teach in Jefferson Parish, and live in Old Jefferson. My school and my neighborhood are very safe places. Working for JPPSS is the best thing that ever happened to me!! And, living in New Orleans rocks!!
Is joining the Union a requirement? Do you have to pay for your own ...See MoreA friend of mine told me how much he loves Louisiana, Shreveport to be exact. He has also told me about the great pay (great compared to what we are dealing with in AZ right now) and the need for teachers. I thought I would go straight to the source to find out more info.
Is joining the Union a requirement? Do you have to pay for your own health insurance?
What are a few things you like and don't like about the state? How is the crime?
Dear AZ Teacher, Where are you from and WHY would you want to come here? If you do choose to come to Shreveport to work as a teacher, you really don't want to work in Caddo Parish...Bossier Parish is the way to go!! Crime is pretty bad in most areas of Shreveport, not as bad in Bossier. You do have to pay for your insurance in Caddo. I'm a 3rd grade teacher in Caddo... haven't had the opportunity to work in Bossier yet, so I'm not sure about their insurance. Bossier teachers do make a little more money than Caddo teachers. Hope this helps!!

I am a Caddo teacher and have been since 1980. Like everywhere there are less challenging schools and challenging schools. I have always taught in challenging schools because it was there I could make the biggest impact on children who need me the most. I also live in Shreveport and have since 1980. I have never been the victim of a crime nor do I know anyone who has. Just like every city, there are parts of town I wouldn't want to live it, so I don't. To the person who loves Bossier, go. Every person needs to evaluate what is right for them and if where you are is not then find something that makes you happy. By the way Bossier pays for their insurance as well.

When I got to school one day, my principal (not a very friendly person to say the least) informed me that my computer had been confiscated and brought to the district technology department because someone had reported that I was looking at adult sites at school. She told me to go home and they'd call me. I went home and was called in the next day by personnel and told that there were several adult sites visited on my classroom computer. When they showed me the computer printout, the sites were visited non-stop for two days, practically all day long. When given the dates they said I looked at the sites, I explained that I was reviewing for a test one of the days (therefore could not have been on the computer all day) and the other day was showing an LPB clip through the very computer that had the sites on it. I also asked if they had checked the computer for viruses or maleware to make sure that there wasn't anything that had just given the appearance of these sites and they told me that the computer had been checked. Personnel said they would interview some students and call me back the next day. The next day when I returned, I was informed that they had decided not to interview students and I had two choices: (1) get terminated and file an appeal to go before the school board, or (2) resign immediately and receive a favorable recommendation to work in another parish. I panicked and resigned, afraid of how it would look if I had to have a school board hearing - especially since I am a male teacher, I feel like I would have been assumed guilty and had no way of proving my innocence except to talk to my students. I know now that I made the mistake of not calling my union rep, but I felt since I was innocent I could handle it myself...Now I'm looking for employment in neighboring cities. What do you all think of this? Isn't it frightening in this day and age that you can be held solely responsible for anything that appears on your classroom's computer, even in a middle school where there are plenty of children with the knowledge of "hacking" practices...

My ex-boyfriend would say my granola-crunching, hippie liberal side is coming out. I just put in an application for Teachnola with the hopes of teaching math. I've been to New Orleans since Katrina and I don't live too far away. I'm also comfortable navigating poor neighborhoods. Once I owned a house where I was the only white person on the street. I've also been around young people since I raised a teenager, so I know what they can be like. So I'm not exactly Ivy League Teach for America, but I think I'd do more good than harm. My problem is this: I read the stories about the teacher lay-offs last year and the idea that I could crowd out someone who has a traditionally acquired certfication because of the positive focus on the non-traditional groups makes me a little uncomfortable. It wouldn't be an issue if a real shortage of teachers existed, but I'm not sure New Orleans has a shortage anymore. Personally, I think a decent state school education major who would be around for years would probably be preferable to a TFA superstar who will spend a year learning how to teach only to leave after a couple of years. I count moving into administration as leaving, incidentally. Doing TeachNola would mean taking a pay cut and giving up a decent job, but I'd do it happily if it meant I would be filling a void and I could change someone's life. But it wouldn't be worth it if I were just taking a spot from someone else who is already in New Orleans, willing and able to do the job. Any insights from local teachers would be greatly appreciated.
